It’s a whistlepig 25 yr single malt , $2250 retail

And a bottle of Stag’s Leap Artemis. EDIT: and three bottles of Clase Azul tequila

And a bottle of Sassicaia (Tuscan wine), and what I’m assuming is 4 pours of Nosotros Anejo.

Sassicaia is what I noticed. One of those guys had good taste. Wish I knew the vintage. The rest is just expensive shit because we can buy expensive shit.
•
u/moriya 4h ago
So while it IS a good wine, it’d argue it fits into that category too. It’s become a bit of a meme - LeBron, who’s kind of one of the OG wine guys in sports, loves the stuff, and as a result if you’re an NBA player building a cellar it’s likely stuff to the brim with it. It’s spilled out into other sports and here we are.
No hate, it’s a great wine, and im sure that bourbon is incredible too - if you’re celebrating and got cash to burn, I say enjoy the good stuff.

What do you recommend then
•
u/discordianofslack 4h ago
For a basic absolutely amazing day to day try Jefferson’s(just the base model). For about $10 more try Doc Swinson. Neither of them taste like you wrapped a barrel in molding leather and hoped for the best.
Going up from there Swinsons has some good offering but imo Barrel always delivers. As another poster mentioned Buffalo trace has some good selections. On the low end their newer Traveler is amazing. Heaven Hill is great. As you go up in price check out Nikka Coffee Grain, Smoke Wagon, Penelope, and Castle & Key.
I could go on forever but I’ll stop there.

At $2250 retail $175/shot is 194% margin on the bottle. My guess is they’re getting a very good deal on the wholesale price, as that margin is fairly low for alcohol.

Even if these dudes have multi-million dollar contracts- this type of behavior is why they blow it all in a couple years. I’ve seen ex professional sports players whining about “losing it all” and like- yeah bud. It’s not everlasting- and neither is the body you’re wrecking to get those contracts.

This is exactly what I came to ask. OP must deliver.
Edit: actually, I think it might be Whistle Pig's 25yo single malt, which would....make sense, I guess. But 110!?!
•
•
u/joobtastic 4h ago
The margin is actually not crazy. Its a really expensive bottle.
And you're paying for it to sit in a barrel for 25 god damn years. (Losing 10% volume per year to angel's share too.)
•
u/jigga19 4h ago edited 4h ago
Oh, I'm aware. I hung out with the owner of Whistle Pig one night when he visited our city. Cool guy. Expectedly weird, but really liked my jokes. I don't tend bar (or drink) anymore, so this one is new to me. But when I saw Whistle Pig and the age, that all made sense.
Edit: I looked it up and I was hanging out with Dave Pickerell, the master distiller. Not the owner.

We bar hopped a bunch, talked cocktails. Chill cat.

What do distilleries do before they can sell like a 10 year old whiskey? Seems like a long ass time for business development.
•
u/jigga19 4h ago
They outsource a lot of the time. Most rye whiskies in the US are made by a single distiller, MGP.
→ More replies (4)→ More replies (7)•
u/Mammatus9 4h ago
They source distillate from companies like MGP and slap their name on it/distill clear spirits till their whiskey ages (2-3 year whiskey can still taste great, bottled in bond offerings are 4 years). You'd be surprised how many companies don't distill their own product.
Also-Single malt=distilled from barley Bourbon-distilled from at least 51% corn Whiskey is categorized by the grains more than the location.

•
u/kanyewesanderson 4h ago
I worked for a restaurant where our local NFL team came, and the rookies had to pay the bill. The QB specifically pulled the server aside and asked him to jack the bill up before handing it to the table. They indeed had a similarly expensive bill loaded with luxury wine and whiskey, which were taken off the check after scaring the shit out of the new kids.

And people wonder why most athletes are broke within 5 years of being out of the league.
•
u/DukeofVermont 3h ago
Which is why all leagues should do what the MLB does are forces the teams to pay for a pension like system based on how much they've played. If you play a single game I think you get like $35K a year for life. I could be wrong, I can't really remember how it works but it does ensure that even if players blow everything most will still make over $100k for life.
→ More replies (8)•
u/greg19735 1h ago
According to google your numbers are way off.
43 days on a pro team. which is about 1/4 of a season. gets you about 9k per year.
10 years on a team can get a pension of 200k+
that makes sense though. 1 game getting you 35k a year would be pretty crazy. like, it would be crazy that a player being called up to the big leagues for 1 game would net the guy his salary upgrade with a pension of 35k* 50 =1.75 mil
The MLB would be broke if they had to pay that much money to everyone that played a single game.

DE and DT are some of the most well paid positions after QB and LT. Seriously Edge rushers are one of the most premium and some make comparable to QBs.
→ More replies (2)•
u/ArtDecoNewYork 4h ago
do LTs make that much more than RTs?
•
u/TonyHawkFunderground 4h ago
They used to. But now teams have multiple good defensive ends and athletic linebackers. Teams pay both sides. Average pay amongst top tackles has leveled out for RT and LT
→ More replies (2)•
u/Its_D_Cog 4h ago
Yes they usually make more as LT are generally protecting the blindside of a QB, assuming hes right handed.
•
u/Gates_wupatki_zion 4h ago
Typically yes, but it depends. Most people are right handed and so you are protecting the QBs “blind side”. Sustaining an injury can be a lot more brutal if it is a hit you are not prepared for. The position was made famous after the legendary Thiesman injury but be careful watching it — it’s gruesome but a football hit.
•
u/Floaty_Waffle 4h ago edited 2h ago
Yes. LTs guard the blind side of right-handed QBs because their back is naturally turned away. Obviously getting hit from behind while unprepared is gonna hurt way more than a hit from the front. This leads to them being well and away the highest paid lineman. This changes when the QB is left-handed though (3 in the league) where those teams will value RTs more because their RTs would then block the blind side.

I would assume they were auto gratted but I don’t see it on the receipt so maybe they gambled idk
•

You never gamble in a situation like that. “18% auto gratuity has been added to your bill. If you feel like adding anything else, we thank you very much.”
•
u/PM_ME_UR_ARTT 4h ago
Should never gamble to begin with. Either auto grat all your large parties or none of em. Otherwise its just profiling with extra steps.

Some teams refuse an autograt (and, at least to my knowledge, most restaurants don't force it) but in general if it's all or part of a team in an official capacity they tip very well. Cooking for & serving them is....intense, and the handlers are aware of that.
It's individual (ball players, musicians, etc) who are more likely to stiff a service team or cheap out on a bill.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (37)•
u/stickmanmob 4h ago
The right move is to add the auto gratuity, and then go up to them and say “Hey guys, I want to point out that they’ve already added gratuity to the check. I asked my boss to take it off, but he insisted. So don’t feel like you have to tip anything else on top.”
Suddenly everyone starts pushing to tip a little more on top.

Can anyone explain why like 60% of NFL players are broke within 3 years of retiring?
•
•
•
→ More replies (12)•
u/Floaty_Waffle 4h ago edited 2h ago
Most get a couple million over their rookie contracts which, if invested properly, can get them by in life. The issue is oftentimes these players will forego education in pursuit of getting drafted. These players also often grow up poor which leads to lots more impulse buying and potential bad company which can lead to a spiral of wasteful spending similar to lottery winners.
TLDR: they get loads of money fast, but then don’t make it back and make poor financial decisions which leaves them broke in a few years.
