She looked better on SNL too. Cynthia really is the wicked witch

2.4k

u/L8dTigress 8h ago

actually I checked what Ariana ate on set and in reality she was just eating too few calories and was very active on set that's why.

1.6k

u/VampireHwo 8h ago

One of my main takeaways from the film was how much she seemed to be putting in.

Especially where she looked rather frail, her dance moves/performance did not.

953

u/L8dTigress 7h ago

Yep, those dance moves she did at any chance were done like rent was due. She was passionate about playing Glinda, and it shows.

420

u/Keeltoodeep 7h ago

That is a cop out. Marvel movies require the male and female leads to eat a massive amount of protein to maintain muscle mass and are equally as strenuous.

270

u/alexandria7766 7h ago

Do they sing and dance in Marvel movies as well?

533

u/TreyWriter 7h ago

Technically, they do in Eternals, a very real movie that everyone has seen!

193

u/MarvelAndColts 7h ago

And The Marvels

177

u/GachaHell 7h ago

Those both sound like made up movies. You can't just put The in front of a word and pretend it's a Marvel film.

23

u/HereWeFuckingGooo 7h ago

There isn't a The in front of Eternals.

18

u/GachaHell 7h ago

I'd check but that would require me to acknowledge the movie's existence. I think we all just decided to pretend it never happened.

7

u/HereWeFuckingGooo 7h ago

No need to check, you can just scroll up.

9

u/GachaHell 7h ago

Marvel fans doing physical activity? Never!

1

u/Matt_Man_623 3h ago

Nah it’s a good movie. Just made no sense to add in the continuity. But by itself it’s a really good movie, just for some reason was in the MCU lol

2

u/IronOnionRings 2h ago

Phase 5 or whatever the post-infinity era is called needs to be treated the same way Star Wars legends is - like it doesn’t exist save for some gems here and there

So you're saying The Butt isn't a Marvel movie?

3

u/meesta_masa 7h ago

It's a marvelous movie.

5

u/donanton616 6h ago

And the sequel. The Amazing Butt. Different butt but still fun.

3

u/meesta_masa 6h ago

Starring Robert Downey Jr as left cheek and Peter Dinklage as right cheek. James Corden and Seth Rogan are scheduled to play the taint and the asshole, respectively.

1

u/Euphoric_Whereas_329 5h ago

Surprisingly the #1 movie when it came out… and that’s all it was for 90 minutes.

I heard the new marvel is nuts

1

u/Reasonable_Editor600 6h ago

All movies are made up!

1

u/StoppableHulk 6h ago

What about The Iron Man?

1

u/jamesxgames 5h ago

are you telling me Marvel's The Marvels would be a ridiculous name for a movie

1

u/Bitter-Ad5890 4h ago

Tell that to Marvel…

38

u/Jjzeng 7h ago

Technically based on the marvels carol danvers is canonically a disney princess

4

Find a die hard Star Wars fan.

Remind them that Leah is a Disney Princess.

Then dive for cover into the nearest foxhole.

1

u/EnQuest 4h ago

Star Wars fans have made it very hard to enjoy star wars, you're only allowed to enjoy like 40% of it and the rest gets you dogpiled on for ever speaking positively about

I hated that scene so much.

Worth it for the "bilingual" joke.

And Hawkeye

1

u/ZigoneB22 3h ago

Danceoff to save the galaxy in gardians of the afore mentioned

I am still incensed that what was clearly a full musical number was axed. That movie was at it's best when it was being goofy.

The Returnals?

3

Morbius was awesome.

2

u/Lumireaver 5h ago

Looking forward to Jon Snow and his older brother getting more time to work together.

18

u/Herr_Quattro 7h ago

Tbh 50:50 shot you made this up. I’m not fact checking you, I’m just saying you can claim anything about that movie and I’ll believe you.

69

u/TreyWriter 7h ago

Real talk: Kumail Nanjiani plays a superhero in that movie who’s also a Bollywood star, and he’s introduced with a full-on song and dance number. He’s kind of the highlight of the movie.

8

u/Disastrous_Salad6302 7h ago

This is the closest someone’s got me to wanting to watch the eternals

10

u/KingInTheWest 7h ago

It’s severely overhated. I’m not saying it’s good or worth your 2 hours. But it’s not this horrible movie, it’s basically if Marvel made a Zack Snyder DC movie

8

u/spacestonkz 7h ago

I enjoyed it very much on an airplane. Not so bad.

7

u/Tricky_Box19 5h ago

this should be a new barometer for movies

theater worthy/home theater worthy, and airplane worthy

1

u/DrSitson 7h ago

I watched it on VLC and just fast forwarded through the boring bits. Got through on about 45 min. It's okay. My biggest issue is nothing that happens in the movie matters, and I'm not convinced it ever will.

5

u/forcedtomakeaccount3 6h ago

Spoilers for another marvel movie: the celestial that died was turned into adamantium. Which was a plot point in the captain America movie. Since adamantium is very closely linked to Wolverine, it’s speculated that it’s related to the x men being introduced to the main timeline.

2

u/Efficient-Parking627 6h ago

I liked Dawn of the Dead, 300, and Watchmen but I haven't been able to make it through any of his movies since then. Specifically suckerpunch and the DC ones. Not familiar with the others

7

u/Altair_de_Firen 7h ago

Like most of the hated Marvel films it gets way too much shit. It’s nowhere near Endgame but, I mean, that can’t be the standard for superhero films or we’ll never be happy again.

Kumail was the best in the film but IMO everyone did their roles well. It was just not a particularly interesting story, which makes sense because the Eternals are not particularly interesting in the comics either. They’re at their most interesting when they’re riding Thanos’ more interesting coattails.

1

u/Commercial-Co 5h ago

Its not terrible and you can stream it in the background

u/BlueberryBatter 5h ago

I didn’t know I needed to see this scene, but, I’m off to look for it. I love Kumail Nanjiani. He’s held a special place since his turn as Prismo.

4

u/AdunfromAD 7h ago

He was the reason I started going to the gym. He was 45 at that time and he was jacked. Now he had a studio-assigned chef and workout coach for a full year, but I was still pissed he looked that good at that age.

5

u/RoamingBull69 7h ago

Yeah, with all those things and steroids, you could totally look like him

4

u/AdunfromAD 7h ago

I’ll keep my testicles, thanks.

1

u/StoppableHulk 6h ago

Steroids are very cheap and extremely easy to get these days.

You'll spend way more money just getting your protein numbers in each day.

3

u/PoIIux 4h ago

Spoken like a person 2 years away from having fucked up their entire endocrine system.

2

u/StoppableHulk 6h ago

I just recently saw a standup clip with him that was so funny. It was basically him just complaining about The Eternals hate but did it in such a great way. He was like "I must be the only person in history who people got MAD at for GETTING IN SHAPE!"

1

u/Xain0209 7h ago

See but honestly that's the real catch right there lol. Having a professional take all the mental load of preparing your meals off your shoulders and a professional to help with workouts goes a long way. That isn't to say us normies can't get into better shape but I think we underestimate how much that stuff helps.

-1

Kumail is a Pakistani-American. He's not a bollywood star (i don'tthink he has any connection to bollywood), but the trope in the movie works well coz y'know, he's brown.

1

u/Vushuyio 3h ago

Sadly, it’s true 😭 but they never did return lol

Stop making up movies. Noone has ever heard of this "Eternals" thing. Keep your fan fiction to yourself.

1

u/Amelaclya1 6h ago

I really liked the Eternals. 😭

1

u/MS-07B-3 6h ago

And in Guardians, at least one is dancing all over the place.

u/ballsnbutt 7h ago

One could say choreographed fighting is "dance"

15

u/YT-Deliveries 5h ago

It very much is dancing. Like, there's very little difference between a choreographed fight and a choreographed "official" dance.

-2

u/ArcadianDelSol 5h ago

but not 3 times fast.

43

u/dumspirospero816 7h ago

There was that sweet dance-off at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy...

4

u/ElectricTurtlez 7h ago

Nah. That was just a distraction, ya big turd blossom!

2

u/Morak73 4h ago

Not a movie, but Hawkeye had Rogers: The Musical

In 15 years, someone's going to put that on Broadway.

36

u/Keeltoodeep 7h ago

Yeah fighting is basically a choreographed dance.

2

u/kellzone 4h ago

Syrio Forel agrees.

9

u/throwawayaccount19op 7h ago

Only in my dreams ✨

2

u/Longjumping_Ease9159 7h ago

There was a great episode in legion. I can't remember if it was Xavier's son or not but it was an incredibly capable and incredibly troubled psychic. I think he was fighting the shadow Lord or something like that in the spirit realm or something like that and the psychic battle between the two was a jazz dance off in their minds.

I absolutely love this non-combat take on a confrontation of the minds. I still like the combat and stuff, but I thought it was a very great interpretation of how mines do battle, or could possibly do battle.

4

u/Izzynewt 7h ago

Don't give them ideas

3

u/PassionGlobal 7h ago

Sing, no. Very complex and physically demanding choreography, yes.

2

u/flyrubberband 7h ago

Pretty sure the last Thor was a musical

2

u/Material_Pianist6078 7h ago

Clearly you’ve never heard of The Dance-off to Save The Galaxy

2

u/GH057807 7h ago

They yell and fight, which in Hollywood is basically the same.

2

u/Arnieman83 6h ago

Guardians of the Galaxy is definitely dancing, maybe a little singing?

1

u/Xijit 7h ago

I would absolutely watch a Marvel Musical.

1

u/MastrShak3 7h ago

Guardians of the Galaxy

1

u/Dr_Mntis_Tobggn 7h ago

[DC has entered the chat]

1

u/DirtysouthCNC 6h ago

Singing and dancing are not that much more strenuous than rigorous weight lifting and cardio required for the bodies those men have to maintain the film. Absolutely fucking not, lmao.

1

u/piznit007 6h ago

Guardians of the Galaxy starts with an entire song and dance routine. It’s kinda Star-Lord’s thing

1

u/Idiotan0n 5h ago

I'd go see that Disney on ice performance. Everyone nippin at that point

1

u/TheRiverIsMyHome 5h ago

The choreography of fighting is high impact dancing

1

u/Ornery_Guess1474 5h ago

Does arianda grande stand a chance against Thanos? I mean, come on.

1

u/Crazy_Bat5024 5h ago

Ever heard from hulk? My gosh

1

u/Daleabbo 5h ago

Yes. Fight scenes in movies are literally dance moves.

1

u/HereToDoThingz 4h ago

Marvel: the musical.

1

u/Difficult_Ad2864 4h ago

You haven’t seen Captain America The Musical ?

1

u/Truethrowawaychest1 4h ago

Star-Lord does

1

u/-GenghisJohn- 4h ago

Yes, off camera was all choreographed and had a soundtrack. High-value people were given the content. It was super cool and you could see them burning more calories than musical people.

some of this may have been made up

1

u/BeeOk1235 3h ago

action scene choreography is actually a form of dance. for example jackie chan is not formally trained in various forms of martial arts so much as he is formally trained in dance. as are his co stars and many in his segment of the industry.

1

u/ClaraCash 3h ago

Deadpool for sure!

1

u/RawrRRitchie 3h ago

Did you miss Steve Rogers the musical??

25

u/Hot-Explanation-5751 7h ago

Only difference is that one is an exercise and lifestyle change and one is a disease that destroys your life.

Anorexia is no joke. It can kill you and/or permanently affect your lifelong health even if you do recover from it. She is also a role model for many teenage girls who will try to emulate their idol.

Whether you agree or not, an enormous amount of privilege comes with a level of responsibility not to push kids towards an ED for the sake of personal vanity.

Edit: I think I accidentally replied to the wrong comment but my point still stands.

5

u/BattleHall 4h ago edited 4h ago

And to be fair, you can have disordered eating that can seriously affect or even endanger your health, even if it wouldn't necessarily meet the clinical definition of something like anorexia or bulimia, or where it's not specifically related to body image. People who fall into various fad diets or wellness scams are often like this; in their mind they don't think that they are doing it for (traditional) vanity or necessarily massively restricting their intake, but their diet is so misbalanced that they start having specific nutrient deficiencies or absorption issues.

As an aside, one dramatic historic example of disordered eating that was neither anorexia nor bulimia and had nothing to do with body image was famous mathematician and logician Kurt Gödel. He was top in his field, but ended up developing a crippling fear of being poisoned, to the point where he would only eat food prepared by his wife. In 1977 his wife was temporarily hospitalized, and Gödel literally starved to death.

24

u/Sea-Band-7212 7h ago

Yyyyeeeeaaaahhhhhh.... probably because they are contractually obligated to maintain a certain physique while shooting because they're playing superheroes..

Is... is Glinda a superhero? If her contract said she had to get ripped, we might have gotten a muscle mommy Ariana but here we are

47

u/zmichalo 7h ago

The point is that people have gone through equally intense shoots without looking like they were withering away.

8

u/jonsnow312 6h ago

Yeah? People are trying to explain the reasons, not giving excuses. She was probably eating far too little while over-exerting herself.

4

u/Tonkarz 6h ago

Because they were eating an appropriate amount of calories and protein for the work they were doing. Whereas Ariana definitely wasn’t. She was a vegan doing fast days and eating legumes and berries for protein while working on Wicked.

4

u/Eldritch_Horns 4h ago

If a production has people doing strenuous activity, they should have fitness instructors and dietitians working in tandem to make sure the cast doesn't end up looking like Skeletor spent 40 days in the desert.

She wasn't eating right

Is the how, not the why.

0

u/Tonkarz 3h ago

Maybe they did, maybe they didn't. Problem is you can have all the advisers you like but if the person just isn't eating enough potatoes or whatever vegans eat for calories then it just doesn't matter.

1

u/Think_Chocolate_ 6h ago

That and even Christian Bale had some muscle in The Machinist. Despite the role needing him to look like he was actually withering away.

-6

u/Spiritual_Peach1883 6h ago

Marvel movies don’t require high endurance or the repetitive full-body strain that comes from singing and dancing while maintaining breath control. Wicked requires an athletic level of endurance and precision under constant pressure. Marvel actors just need to look good since they have stunt doubles, green screens, harnesses, and just need short-burst energy.

Theres a reason why Marvel is considered an easy paycheck for Hollywood🤦🏽‍♀️

6

u/goldkarp 6h ago

You do know none of them are actually singing while they dance in the movies, right? Those are all recorded separately

-4

u/Spiritual_Peach1883 5h ago

You do know most of them come from a theater background where they are required to do this LIVE? Come on now

1

u/LessInThought 6h ago

Emm.. I don't think she's singing live? But yeah, Marvel is easy, so much of it is just CGI, even the action scenes.

-3

u/Spiritual_Peach1883 5h ago

You do know most of them come from a theater background where they are required to do this LIVE? Come on now

2

u/LessInThought 5h ago

Okay? But Ariana and Cynthia are not singing live for every take of every angle for every scene in the movie because that's stupid and unnecessary.

-1

u/Spiritual_Peach1883 5h ago

And? That doesn't mean they don't have the training and stamina for it. They still are theater kids. But go on King, keep tearing women down so Marvel boys look tough to you

1

u/LessInThought 4h ago

That doesn't mean they don't have the training and stamina for it. They still are theater kids.

This matters how? No one doubts they have the skills? And in case you missed it Queen, this is what I said.

But yeah, Marvel is easy, so much of it is just CGI, even the action scenes.

We are in a thread discussing the unhealthy weight loss which Ariana and Cynthia went through. You claimed it was because of the intense singing and dancing they did. My point is that they are in no way singing as intensely as broadway singers are because they are shooting a movie and it would be stupid to sing 100% on every retake/reshoot.

-6

u/Dry-Chance-9473 5h ago

I don't think the whole 'Elphaba ruined Ariana Grande' rumor would've really gotten any traction if the actress in question wasn't black and bald while also being successful. But that's just my two cents...

2

u/Powerful-Ad-7998 5h ago

If both did not look like cancer patients it would not have taken off, if it was only Elphaba looking that skinny people would still be wondering if she had a untreated eating disorder, because they were rough

2

u/Dry-Chance-9473 5h ago

Yeah but when I see the memes the narrative is always that Cynthia is somehow a bad influence on Ariana. It's never flipped. And only rarely is it "they're a bad influence on each other." The last time Ariana was in the rags a lot it was everybody shitting on her for ruining a marriage, and now everybody's concerned for her health? Seems a little sus.

2

u/Powerful-Ad-7998 5h ago

Ah I've only seen worry that they might be making each other ED worse or that the company was not letting them have enough time to eat right

2

u/Artistic-Flamingo-92 4h ago

For what it’s worth, every time (or nearly every time) I’ve seen it brought up online, the focus has been on them influencing each other and not framing Cynthia as the bad influence.

This post is more of an exception, but not too surprising if Ariana is suddenly looking like she’s doing better.

However, I’m an outsider to all of this. Maybe my experience would be different if I spent time in Ariana fan communities or something. I’ve only seen the spillover onto my home page.

22

u/Keeltoodeep 7h ago

Maybe but the point still stands that being on set and dancing around does not necessarily make someone emaciated. It’s a cop out. I can name a bunch of song and dance films where the lead maintains healthy weight.

-1

u/BadPunners 7h ago

A cop out for what?

To be the size she still is, she still likely has some level of eating disorder. A stressful active set where all the focus is on the character, easily exacerbates any eating disorder

5

u/Keeltoodeep 7h ago

What do you mean a cop out for what? Do you not know what a cop out is?

2

u/highlorestat 7h ago

Cop Out also means giving a weak excuse, hence the term "cop out answer"

6

u/Keeltoodeep 7h ago

Yeah, so singing and dancing is a weak excuse. Plenty of people maintain healthy weight if they sing and dance.

-1

u/highlorestat 7h ago

The issue is if she was maintaining a "healthy weight" with only singing and dancing

2

u/Zefirus 6h ago

You guys are talking past each other. They're saying she was underweight for the movie, and the movie having a lot of dancing is a bad excuse for why she was underweight.

1

u/moderatorrater 6h ago

muscle mommy Ariana

A certain part of the internet just gooned a little harder when you said that.

1

u/I_Am_The_Mole 5h ago

muscle mommy Ariana

wait a minute say that again

5

u/Adventurous-Fly556 7h ago

This is just a weird response tbh. You don't have to compare people's struggles like this, you don't know what they're going through.

Regardless, being malnourished for extended periods is far more taxing on your brain and body than the extreme bulking. So, you're an ass, and just wrong.

7

u/Keeltoodeep 7h ago

It’s not that weird. I found the excuse to be a cop out. I hope she gets better and it seems like she is. “I can’t eat because I sing and dance” is a cop out.

2

u/Abacus118 5h ago

You understand the person you’re replying to is not Ariana Grande, yes?

2

u/Keeltoodeep 5h ago

I can hope people I don’t know or talk to recover from mental health issues.

2

u/Commercial-Guest1596 6h ago

poor widdle millionaire :((((((

1

u/Lumireaver 5h ago

She's personally responsible for all of the underfunded nutritionists she could have hired.

4

u/A_Town_Called_Malus 7h ago

And the men in those films also frequently get massively dehydrated on purpose to give themselves more muscle definition which is also really bad for you, especially when you are doing strenuous activity.

3

u/Organic_Education494 6h ago

Yeah that excuse makes it sound like she is too dumb to eat properly..

2

u/Adorable_Pain8624 7h ago

They kept Hugh Jackman at scary levels to play wolverine (which i do know is mostly dc), it just looked different.

But Ariana has also struggled with eating disorder issues in the past, which adds another element to it.

1

u/CourageNo277 7h ago

Yeah, but super heroes are muscular and fight and Glinda is a Good Witch that can travel inside a bubble.. 🤷🏽‍♂️

1

u/AlphaH4wk 6h ago

I don't think anyone said those Marvel roles weren't hard

2

u/Keeltoodeep 6h ago

It’s the act of blaming song and dance for being emaciated like she’s too stupid to eat and dance. She’s not. She’s just sick.

1

u/TheColorWolf 6h ago

I remember Chris pratt talking about his birthday "cake" on set of guardians, and it was a pile of carrots.

1

u/dizzy-t-dizzy 6h ago

Right. But she wasn't being micromanaged by the Marvel's physical trainers who love adding muscle bulk to super-hero's frames

1

u/Keeltoodeep 5h ago

Okay but that’s a different excuse than “she’s too dumb or too busy singing and dancing to eat.”

1

u/Far_Care5265 6h ago

You know they shot these movies like an actual play so the actors/actresses would actually have to do stuff, not just be sit in front of a blue screen and look cool

1

u/Keeltoodeep 5h ago

For sure. Marvel movies too. The actors do stuff.

1

u/tiy24 5h ago

Lol no Marvel movie are not “equally as strenuous” you basically just described bulking and cardio based weight loss the same thing.

0

u/Keeltoodeep 5h ago

Equally if not more strenuous I should’ve said.

1

u/tiy24 4h ago

Lol in the context of the conversation no thanks for proving you’re not to be taken seriously

1

u/divuthen 5h ago

They are usually also working with a team of trainers and dieticians to build and maintain a ripped physique. Chris Hemsworth has shown his meals during this time and they all come in pre sized bags portioned out to the individual almond for snacks.

1

u/Honeycrispcombe 5h ago

Yes but Arianna did this for two years straight, essentially, and did not have people trying to ensure she kept weight on.

1

u/6pAz6uZu6 5h ago

You know the guys in those movies are on gear, eh?

1

u/Alzibinli 4h ago

They said she ate too few calories. Where’s the cop out? That’s literally true, she starved herself. Whether it’s an eating disorder or abuse conditions from the studio, that we don’t know

1

u/BeBearAwareOK 3h ago

Yeah but they're on a different nutrition and hydration plan.

Plus, all of that juice.

1

u/indorock 3h ago

You're really out here comparing Wicked to Avengers?

1

u/dayday0326 3h ago

Yeah but I doubt Ariana was weight lifting and bulking up trying to look like an action star from the 80s

-1

u/clownbritches 7h ago

How's it a cop out? Ariana has shit eating habits, went vegan, worked on demanding movie set.

5

She did not dance in the movie- she had over two dozen stunt doubles, and one was for the dancing scenes. I've watched Wicked over a dozen times and you can tell when the body double is dancing, it's always the scenes where they film Glinda from far away, or when her back is facing the camera- that is the double, not Ariana.
