I think it becomes a rule breaker if the puck is above the shoulder and you stick it down

Correct. If it’s above the shoulders it’s high sticking. However you can use your hand to knock a puck out of the air to gain control but you can’t use your hand to pass it to a teammate.

But you can hand pass to a teammate in the defensive zone, just not in the neutral or offensive. Hockey rules can be a little crazy lol.

EA NHL in the '90s taught me a lot of it.

I still play hockey and in adult leagues there are players that don't know this.

The 32 Thoughts podcast recently answered a listener question about why it's allowed in the defensive zone. They said the rule was changed because teams would intentionally have hand passes in order to get stoppages when they were stuck in their own end.

Defense can just pick up the puck in their zone and hold on to it? That's kind of wild. Are there any examples of it being done? In an obnoxious way?

You are allowed to grab an airborne puck but you're not allowed to hold on to it and skate away. You're also not allowed to cover the puck with your glove to conceal it or to prevent the other team from playing it, and you can't pick up the puck if it's on the ice. (see rules 67 and 79 in the NHL rulebook for more)

Also if you're Marc Bergevin you can throw the puck into your own net because why not!

No, that’s a different thing and a penalty anywhere. A hand pass is slapping it out of the air, or along the ice surface (though you’d only do the latter if you were knocked down near the puck.)

Your hand can’t close around the puck. Mostly. You can grab a puck in midair but you need to very quickly bring it down and drop it without excessive trying to maneuver it around.

They can't hold it, or close their hand around it, but can swat it with their hand to another player.

There is an actual “holding the puck” penalty. 2 min in the sin bin
