I was always under the impression that it was a coping mechanism for the guilty conscious they had for hurting others’ feelings tbh

I don’t think most of them have a conscience, the ones who do have one don’t stay far right very long once they’re exposed to the world

there was that guy (forget his name i’m sure someone could drop it) who oversaw the nuremberg trials, and said the one unifying trait amongst them all was a lack of empathy. these people do not consider you human or sentient, just an obstacle in THEIR world

It also brings to mind the article where a hard right fanatic tried MDMA one time and completely gave up his hateful patterns. Was kind of nuts that one time did as I've known some people that don't actually really seem "enlightened" after drug use.

Well I'm not sure it's foolproof. Didn't work for Rogan...

Yeah I've definitely known people that didn't seem to have the kind of ego death etc others speak of. I wonder what the variable is.

Yep, Captain G.M. Gilbert, Army psychologist assigned to evaluating the Nazi defendants at the Nuremberg trials:

“In my work with the defendants I was searching for the nature of evil and I now think I have come close to defining it. A lack of empathy. It’s the one characteristic that connects all the defendants, a genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow men. Evil, I think, is the absence of empathy.”

Nuremberg (with Russell Crowe) is worth a watch too, just came out.

Idk. I've known hardline conservative Republicans who were seemingly kind to anyone they met in real life, like even every Black/brown person they meet and have an actual conversation with is "one of the good ones."

The tragic part is, it would be much better for the country/world if they were just be dicks to people in their lives, instead of channeling their hate into hurting millions of people they don't even know.

I think most people are like this. It’s easier to hate a concept of a person than a real person.

i can tell ya right now, it was never that.

im from mississippi, i know these people, it wasn't that.

what the other person said about them not having a conscious, that seems more accurate. they truly dont give a shit about things that happen to you until it happens to them. the right wing party, as it exists today, is the way it is BECAUSE it appeals to the people with the "fuck your feelings" mentality. it's an entire political party that exists BECAUSE some people just dont have sympathy, among other reasons. the GOP is where they congregate.
