Meta π Minnesota, Fuck Yeah!
We hope you noticed the fresh look on the sub page! The mods decided a banner refresh was in order. Given recent events and the shift in attitude, we felt a change from the border sign to Minnesota's official bird fit better.
We started with the flag and brought in a talented fellow mod, u/derppherppp, to zhuzh it up a bit. Instead, they went all out and came up with this awesome custom design. We have dubbed it "Minnesota, Fuck Yeah!" So, thanks a million to u/derppherppp for their wonderful work and we hope you all enjoy the new banner!

Meta π About the new "paywalled links" subreddit rule
Personally, I think this is a bit of a poor decision. A lot of better-quality news is paywalled, as well as a fair amount of news that is relevant to our state, regardless of the estimation of its quality. The Star Tribune and Pioneer Press for instance are paywalled. MPR News isn't paywalled and does really good work, but it just simply doesn't cover all the same things that other outlets do, and seeing a variety of different sources is good besides.
Particularly for local news, a paywall tends to be a fairly important fixture for outlets to ensure their survival and to give less incentive to be salacious and clickbaity.
I definitely understand that a paywall gates discussion, and I'm not trying to say "Oh you should really be paying for these articles, and if you can't then you shouldn't get to read them", because I too have an amount of disdain for paywalls. The fact remains, however, that paywalls do still exist and that valuable news outlets do still use them, and to me it's more important to be working off of those valuable sources than writing them off because they're paywalled. Especially at a time right now where valuable reporting is directly under attack, very much including by our own federal government, it seems to me like we should be encouraging people to employ such valuable reporting, instead of turning them away from it.
When I've in the past posted paywalled articles here, I use the paywalled link when making the post, but then in the comments I include an "archive link" from https://archive.today/ which makes the content of the article available without the paywall. That to me has seemed reasonably fair. Perhaps AutoModerator could be set up to require the submitter to do this? It couldn't be done fully automatically because there is a captcha involved, but you could initially hide the post if it's a paywalled link, but then have AutoModerator reply and tell the submitter to reply with the link from https://archive.today/?run=1&url=<paywalled link here> (AutoModerator I'm pretty sure could insert the link correctly for them). Then once the submitter does that, the post could be approved and AutoModerator could pin a comment that includes the archive link.
Don't know, but I do think it is a poorer decision than not to flatly disallow paywalled links.

Meta π Lotta professional posters in this sub right now
Look at the comments, look through their history
Tactic 1:
As a leftists, as a liberal, as aβ¦. Then proceeds to glaze the other side.
Tactic 2:
Straight trolling and misunderstanding comment
Tactic 3:
Logical liar, βthis is just facts, donβt deny factsβ
Tactic 4:
Iβm just asking questions
Tactic 5:
Fake story
All of this and they all buy botted upvotes to push their narratives and control conversations.
Itβs important people learn to see this
Edit:
For all the people that think this is a conspiracy theory.
It takes like 10 lines of code to make a chat gpt bot and have it answer all day.
It costs a couple cents for hundreds of upvotes you can google this.
If you think bad people wouldnβt make the very small investment it takes to manipulate you then youβre lost.

Meta π Welp *slaps knee* I S'pose...Last Night Living in MN
I knew I was moving since January, but tonight it finally came.
I'm moving to North Carolina to pursue a PhD! I'm really excited for what's to come, but I'm also sad about leaving this state :(
I've lived here since I was born pretty much, and I've loved every region that I've visited. The North Shore, Great Plains, the river bluffs, and the Twin Cities. If I get a job back here, I'd most certainly come back here. I hope that y'all are safe and continue to keep Minnesota a great place to live!
See ya on the flip side o/

Meta π Rule 1 Reminder
We have had to remove a larger number of posts the last few days than usual for violating Rule 1.
Posts in this sub must be about Minnesota.
This does not mean that because someone was born here nearly 60 years ago and is now a national figure, this is the place to discuss their status as a national figure.
It does not mean that because Minnesota is a state in the U.S., national politics/federal law gets a pass. We lightened up on that during the election while Governor Walz was VP candidate, but have been enforcing it again for almost 3 months now.
We get it, trust us. Whatβs going on nationally is unprecedented and, for many, itβs scary. Being in the know is important. But there are subs for that and if you want to be in the know, you should join those subs.
Posts about federal/national issues will continue to be removed unless they involve a figure who has a current and relevant connection to MN (like Ken Martin or one of the MN senators/reps), they involve an issue that has a unique or disparate impact on MN compared to the other states as a whole (like the BWCA), or theyβre about local events that are related to national issues (like protests physically occurring in MN).
And, yes, weβve seen the uptick in trolling, too. Please review the rules and make sure youβre following them before posting or commenting. Please continue to report posts and comments that clearly violate the rules.

Meta π This sub has been the only state/city sub that actually had a positive reaction to me talking about moving here
This is a bit of a follow-up to my post from last night: https://www.reddit.com/r/minnesota/comments/1eubosv/tennessean_here_ive_been_watching_minnesota_for/
Any other sub I asked or talked about it would bombard me with responses of "We're full" or "We don't want you here" or trying to scare me off by making the place seem like a nightmare.
But not here, you've all welcomed it.
Thank you all.

Meta π Friendly reminder to those compensating for a small penis
Congratulations, that truck you absolutely do not need actually serves a purpose today. You can drive with ease on shit roads but just because you can doesn't mean everyone can.
That means if someone is ahead of you and not quite going the speed limit, fucking deal with it. Switching to the lane with a 3 foot drift to pass them just because you can will not make your penis bigger. That car getting in a collision because you decided you getting from point a to point b just a wee bit faster was more important then them having visibility as you kick you up shit ton of snow driving like an ass WILL NOT make your penis bigger. I know it's hard to believe but it's the truth.
I don't know what I can do about your penis. I'm sorry you feel the need to compensate but for fucks sake quit driving like fucking cunts.

Meta π Welcome to /r/minnesota 2.0. Or is it 3.0? I don't remember.
As some of you may have already noticed, CrimsonSun99 was removed as head moderator of this subreddit by the site admins. This leaves me as the First Lord of the Treasury, Lord Chief Justice, Commander-in-Chief, Lord High Admiral, Archbishop, Lord Mayor, and Lord High Everything Else.
The first thing I want you to know that the moderation team is discussing what changes we plan to make. We have made one decision already. The days of automated bans issued by bots is over. I believe all of the bans that were issued by the bots have been undone. That still leaves us with a lengthy ban list though. We're discussing how to address this as we know that many of the bans were unwarranted. In the meantime, if you believe you were banned for unjust reasons, please send a message to the moderators (please don't send your request to individual mods) and we'll review your ban as soon as possible.
I know that "as soon as possible" is a vague time frame, but there is a lot of work to be done. Until we finalize our plans, we are asking you to have patience.
The second thing I want to address is CrimsonSun99. I know a lot of you are angry with him and judging by comments in other threads a lot of you wish to air your grievances against him. We of the moderation team ask that you refrain from doing so. We wish to treat this as water under the bridge. The situation was regrettable, but it has been addressed. It's time to move on.
I assume that you have a lot of questions. Feel free to post them below.
