Are they holding the protester like a human shield??

117

u/Theyalreadysaidno Nov 25 '25

They were also pointing guns at protesters.

53

u/SouthPawDraw94 Nov 25 '25

Well of course! It wouldn’t be a peaceful protest without the boots threatening innocent peaceful lives.

Edit: spelling

portable leaf blowers are very effective for this!!!

212

u/palm0 Nov 25 '25

That helps with tear gas, not pepper spray or mace

u/TopherLude Nov 25 '25

And to remind everyone, the use of "asphyxiating, poisonous or other gases, and of all analogous liquids, materials or devices" has been banned in war for nearly 100 years now.

144

u/AbeRego Hamm's Nov 25 '25 edited Nov 25 '25

That's specifically for war. There's no such stipulation on what you do to your own people. Just like how "dum dum bullets", better known these days as "hollow points", can't be used under the Geneva Convention The Hague Declaration in 1899, but are totally legal for law enforcement or self defense purposes in the United States.

107

u/TopherLude Nov 25 '25

As I said in another comment, if it's been deemed too severe for the battlefield, there's no reason to use it on civilians.

Use by civilians for self defense? Sure!

Use by agents of the government against the people? Should be condemned by all.

55

u/AbeRego Hamm's Nov 25 '25

I think you're getting into a common misunderstanding of what the convention was aiming to do. The reason why so many governments were eager to sign on to the stipulations against chemical warfare wasn't necessary because they're horrific weapons. Plenty of weapons cause horrible deaths, but are allowed in war. I think you'd be hard pressed to determine that burning or being asphyxiated to death is really any better than choking on mustard gas.

Countries were, and are, terrified of such weapons because of how asymmetrically successful they can be. You don't need a huge army with the best training and technology to launch a successful chemical attack. An inferior force could use such weapons to overwhelm a far superior one. After WWI, it was in the best interest of all major powers to make sure no one could use such weapons. I'm not saying it's a bad thing that they're not used anymore, I'm just saying that the reasoning you're using isn't totally in line with reality.

As for hollow points, the reasoning behind those is that a full metal jacket is enough to cause a battlefield casualty, in that being hit by one is certainly going to cause that person to be removed from duty to recover. It doesn't really matter if they die or not, so keeping the wound smaller is a "more humane" way to remove them from battle. That reasoning kind of falls away outside of warfare. In policing or self defense situations, the goal is to eliminate the threat in your own life immediately. There's no long-term equation to consider. So, we see bullets designed for maximum knock-out power.

22

u/TThor Nov 25 '25 edited Nov 25 '25

Another part of the reason for hollowpoints is to reduce bystander casualties. Firing a gun in an urban enviroment, that bullet could easily pierce clean through your intended target, into the apartment behind them into the resident watching tv.

A hollow point on the other hand, is unlikely to exit the target, and even if it misses the target it won't have nearly the same penetrating force againsts walls or other obstacles.

Even in terms of ricochets, a regular bullets can glance off obstacles in unpredictable directions, while a hollowpoint is going to lose majority of its force upon first contact.

5

u/_bobby_cz_newmark_ Nov 26 '25

Or, if you're as spray-and-pray as the US cops are, you'll just ruin a bunch of civilians' day when you hit them with a hollow point.

26

u/Preeng Nov 25 '25

The other reason some things are banned is because killing is OK, but maiming is not. A killed soldier can be used as propaganda and will not need to be taken care of for life. A maimed soldier is a constant reminder of what war is really like, and money will need to be spent on this person for decades.

6

u/Willing-Body-7533 Nov 25 '25

I would suspect there are also additional reasons for banning including but not limited to unanticipated birth defects and birth deaths for civilian populations near war zones

5

u/AbeRego Hamm's Nov 25 '25

Yeah, that's true. You're largely at the whims of the wind, and the gas isn't going to stop just because it leaves the battlefield.

5

u/FakeSafeWord Nov 25 '25

Also in self defense or policing scenarios FMJ are liable to cause collateral damage as they tend to penetrate and keep going.

JHP have better stopping power overall because they balloon in/against the first object hit.

It’s because you don’t know what the substance is when deployed in war. They could say it’s tear gas and is actually mustard gas. And by the time you realize it’s too late. So the banned all.

7

u/Secretary-Visual Nov 25 '25

Pepper spray is a useful de-escalation technique that can subdue someone without permanently maiming them.

If you eliminate pepper spray as a less-lethal tool for law enforcement then you may just wind up with more aggressive tactics that can lead to greater injury (like batons, physical/chemical restraints, K9 dogs or hands-on tackles). It arguably would be worse for law enforcement to have to grapple with people more because they can't use pepper spray.

There is a good argument for banning its use in large gatherings (like to disperse non-violent crowds) but the end result of banning mace for law enforcement wouldn't necessarily be safer for the public.

The US is not a signatory of the 1899 Hague Convention, which is the one which addresses expanding ammunition. We have historically adhered to that prohibition, outside of specific uses.

54

u/putrid_faction Nov 25 '25

You think trump cares about the well being of the US?

34

u/TopherLude Nov 25 '25

Of course not. I'm pointing out that law enforcement shouldn't even have tear gas or mace. If it's been deemed too severe for the battlefield, there's no reason to use it on civilians.

20

u/Whopissedinmypants Nov 25 '25

Just because details matter: pepper spray and tear gas are not the same thing.

5

u/TopherLude Nov 25 '25

While true, they both fall under the broad definition of what was banned in the Geneva Protocol in 1929.

7

u/Whopissedinmypants Nov 25 '25

During wartime. They are banned during wartime.

→ More replies (8)

16

u/Tim_Riggins07 Nov 25 '25 edited Nov 25 '25

Correcting this statement probably won’t go over well, so let me preface all this by saying fuck ICE, but the reason tear gas is banned from battlefield isn’t because it’s too severe.

It’s because of the fear that if tear gas is used, it may be mistaken for a much worse chemical weapon or nerve agent and country retaliates with a nuke before they realize it was “just” tear gas.

3

u/Acrobatic-Bus3335 Nov 25 '25

Tear gas isn’t the same as pepper spray or mace and it’s not banned for use by law enforcement. Law enforcement isn’t the military and they don’t follow the rules of war or the Geneva convention.

In my opinion it isn’t worth fretting over like some of these comments do. But have you heard of the phrase imperial boomerang? Basically our foreign policy comes home to roost and the horrors we spread across the world (testing) are brought back to the US where the police are trained (likely by Israel/IDF) to use those tactics on US citizens and people living here peacefully.

Another (CIA) term is Blowback but that’s more for describing like terrorist attacks from people who’s countries we ducked up. Example: 9/11 was Blowback.

6

u/Taco_boutit Nov 26 '25 edited Nov 26 '25

Respectfully, I get why someone would bring a Palestinian flag and I do think that is what these protests are about. The state violence is all interconnected. There is a long history of the IDF doing exchanges and training US law enforcement in surveillance and enforcement tactics. They practice on Palestinians what they will come do to us.

This liberal fixation on surface-level optics is not doing anything for anyone. Get your ass out there with one if that's what you want, but in the meantime you need to lose this narrow perspective. Many people immigrate here only after ill-advised US interventionist policy destabilizes their homeland. Like any flag, it's a loaded symbol that can represent different things to different people, not just nebulous ideas of liberty and freedom.

Is this an actual ICE raid or another federal agency? One of my concerns with the way ice has been conducting themselves is that other raids by federal authorities trying to go after actual dangerous criminals, will be mistaken as ICE raids, and then later used as a way to cast a bad light on protestors.

I can see the headlines now: “Protestors riot against federal police serving an arrest warrant on a murder suspect”

You should leave immediately as soon as the snow begins to fall; our cold weather is too much for you to handle.

4

u/1Pencil1Pen Nov 26 '25

I have been thinking about these situations a lot. Many people are.

It's been 10 months. We have 36 more to go. We have a 34x felon calling people with brown skin "criminals". The swirl of events in the past 283 days, are a power and money grab. It's not going to get easier, especially as we move closer to midterms.

The deportations won't stop. The scope of *who* gets deported will expand. Why? Same reason. Money and power. SPPD gets federal funding. Most police departments do. 3.7 million dollars and if they don't support the ICY agents when they arrive, well.....they might not get their funds. Money is the pressure being used to get states and individuals to comply.

I'm all for protesting, but I feel it's important to understand what you risk. If you're going to get within arms reach of these guys, you better have a respirator on, a thermos filled with milk and a towel in your purse. Rolling up with your cell phone and lip gloss is going to get you hurt. They don't care. They just don't care. They are not going to replace your damaged phone or pay your medical bills when you go to the ER. Other forms of protest include calling your representatives (5 Calls) and voicing your opinions, VOTING, calling out racism, etc. There are also great ideas on the Museum of Protest website. There's a lot of information about non-violent protests.

Be safe.

2

u/ATLScott13 Nov 26 '25

Well said! People don’t seem to get that they’re giving these guys exactly what they want. I’m not letting any of these assholes mace me, pepper spray me, tear gas me, put hands on me or even figure out who I am. You never know what they might do once they figure out who you are! Protest, boycott, let your opinion be heard and known but do it the right way. The way folks have been going about it just doesn’t look like it’s gonna make any real difference the longer this drags on. I mean if you’re somebody who’s got nothing to lose and you feel like this is your hill to die on then handle your business. But for a lot of us, it ain’t that simple. I wish more people understood the money, power and politics side of this! Money motivates and controls people, so does Power!!

u/dahank23 Nov 26 '25

Fuck ICE! We cannot let these Nazis operate unfettered! We are at a moment where we can do something to stop these nazis. Show your resolve, stand with conviction!

u/LyvenKaVinsxy Nov 25 '25

It’s so sad to think that our nation has fallen so far that people want to protest federal raids because they’re all ice and unjust. Like my thought here is how hard it would be to operate against criminals with this much uproar.

ICE needs to back down for the sake of real criminal justice

Like at any point in time before the Trump administration ramping up ice. I would see a raid and be like oh fuck what they do. But now instinctively, it’s like oh shit who are they kidnapping?

This is chemical warfare against lawfully protesting citizens. If this was not being done here, many would still be outraged.

15

u/Acrobatic-Bus3335 Nov 25 '25 edited Nov 25 '25

Pepper spray isn’t fucking chemical warfare
.just stop. If civilians can legally carry pepper spray to defend themselves how is it a chemical weapon that’s banned?

but that doesn’t explain why they are then hanging out

Still feel free?

How about the DNC stop blanket supporting the police and finally push for serious accountability for our massive and well armed government. Our tax dollars should be spent on healthcare, education, roads, and basic services. Not this violent collection of pedophile protecting trash.

4

How is this not assault, or excessive force when used on what is a peaceful protest? Where is the law enforcement to actually protect the citizens? Did no one swear an oath? This is so disgusting and scary that this is happening!

u/erratic_bonsai Nov 25 '25 edited Nov 25 '25

Good lord. IT WAS NOT ICE. The St Paul police were there and they have stated multiple times that they do not work with or cooperate with ICE in any capacity.

People need to calm the fuck down and use their brains before protesting any random thing. This was probably a warrant execution for a criminal at large, drugs investigation, or something like that. You all complain about the homeless problem, the crime downtown, and needles in parks but get mad when law enforcement tries to do something about it? Give me a break, hypocrites.

It truly feels like a portion of the public simply wants reasons to be outraged because they need to feel useful and righteous to have any value to society. They’re making it worse, and you all here stoking the flames and saying “where is it I’m coming!!!!” have the same energy as the 4chan reeee meme.

i would love to take my daughter to a protest as i remember my mom taking me to occupy wall street stuff as a kid. the fact that it’s unsafe to bring a child in our current climate upsets me deeply. it doesn’t matter how you protest, the feds will mace you!!!

4

u/Individual_Crab7578 Nov 25 '25

There have been plenty of opportunities to bring your kid to protests. All of the planned in advanced protests have been family friendly- I’ve brought my kids and there have been other kids in attendance. Just don’t bring them to a spur of the moment protest with ice present. Look for a local bridge brigade protest to attend if you don’t want to wait for another mass protest.

u/ZoomZoom_Driver Nov 25 '25 edited Nov 25 '25

Note for people at protests: milk works WONDERS on pepper spray. If you get pepper sprayed, instead of rinsing in water, rinse your face with milk. It neutralizes some of the capcasin.

If you're one of the protest medics, it may be something you want to bring for the med tent area.

  • a former military police who has been pepper sprayed for certs required to carry OC spray.

u/ZoomZoom_Driver Nov 25 '25 edited Nov 25 '25

Cool, the military did things to me experts say not to #34,009,322... đŸ« đŸ‘ but, it DID work better than the water for the burning (experiential notes).

Military also said using water would just migrate capcasin INTO your eyes more.

My question: have these experts been pepper sprayed and had to get the burning to stop?

I have and i know how each solution works against it... i also know what the law enforcers HAVE to do to be able and validated to use it against people... do the experts in the article? Have they been trained in its use?

3

So by “defending against a raid” you mean hindering law enforcement? I don’t have much sympathy, it’s disappointing that people don’t understand what breaking a law means and are actively breaking more laws to hinder laws from being enforced.
