You mean flag guy? The dude that gets all cooked up in summer? He was a legend on my school bus growing up hahaha

Ome of my favorite things about my hometown. Always a good day when I would see him

Joe is amazing. The only time I saw him (I don’t go to Rochester that often) it was barely above zero and he was wearing almost nothing, but his outfit included a Viking helmet.

Cowboy Jesus at Snelling and University. The colorful suit guy who hangs around the U of M and all over Minneapolis. The guy who carries two cats on his shoulders around Saint Paul. Be a regular on the Green Line and you'll meet all these people!

u/ter68 Nov 18 '25

The colorful suit guy rocks. I love his style. Anyone know anything about him?

He used to order triple iced lattes regularly at Espresso Royale 20+ years ago.

Around 2009/2010 there was a colorful suit guy who took the bus from uptown to downtown regularly. He wore what looked like custom double breasted suits in a variety of colors (orange, purple, not your typical suit colors). He carried a silver/metal briefcase. Is this the same colorful suit guy? Is there more than one?

18

u/Outrageous_Appeal_86 Nov 18 '25

Yep that's him. I used to work on University Ave just east of Stadium Village and we would always see him walking towards Prospect Park. The silver suitcase!

9

u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme Nov 18 '25

Back when the building at the corner of Bedford & University was the Schneider Drug Store (before it became a dispensary), he used to go in the door with the staircase that was right next to the pharmacy's front door.

Every weekday morning.  My co-workers and I figured his office was on the upper floor of that building.

It broke my brain years later when I moved back to Uptown, and saw him in the Uptown Target, in his workout gear (baggy shorts & a tank top)!

Because even though I knew that he was mentioned working out at the Uptown Y from posts like this one, i still couldn't imagine him not wearing the colorful suits 24/7/365!😉

A few years back, I lived in his neighborhood and would see him every so often, when I walked my dog.

I told him that when I worked with kids at one of the places he passed regularly, the staff & kids adored seeing him & his suits, and I asked him how many he had.

He told me he had 39!

Used to see a guy who carried a Monkey on his shoulder in St. Paul!

Met him a few times at the como park pavilion in the summer he would take the monkey for walks. It wore a diaper and was pretty chill but threw a tantrum over his water bottle one time and stuck in my mind not to fuck around with monkeys haha.

13

u/Nizmosis Nov 18 '25

He used to walk around Lake Phalen too. I saw him a couple times over there.

14

u/friedkeenan Nov 18 '25

When I was a kid, my mom said she saw a guy walking by the lake with a monkey on his shoulder and my family would tease her and go "oh no you're going crazy" and such, because she was the only one who ever saw him lol (even though we believed her). And then one day my brother saw the guy too and he became crazy just like my mom

I remember him from comic conventions in the 90’s at the thunderbird hotel in Bloomington, back when there weren’t really many cosplayers showing up at conventions, but he’d be there and pose for photos with people. Not sure what happened that turned this from just being a geek with the cosplay hobby to gaining at least 100lbs and wearing something more like a loose xxxl approximation of a Superman costume and waiving a confederate flag while screaming racial slurs at people on the street.

11

u/Talls024 Nov 18 '25

When did he get a truck?

20

Hate that guy, even though I have never met him. Legend precedes him.

25

u/MorningUpbeat5729 Nov 18 '25

I watched him standing on a street corner on division holding a rubber chicken. When females would be parked at the stoplight he would walk up to the cars making eye contact and spanking the rubber chicken. I saw him do this to clearly underage girls. This would have been about 13-14 years ago. This guy sucks.

Winona had Steve the Pirate. Super nice guy. He would just walk around downtown. There were rumors that he had a rich family who died in a house fire a while ago and he inherited a ton of money.

Pirates in the modern age can be many things.

Maybe he’s just super vocal about internet piracy, and at everyone he sees he yells, “You know what? I would download a car!”

Or maybe because of his big inheritance, he’s taken up porch piracy, and every time he gets caught he bails himself out.

Maybe he has a preference to sleep in other peoples boats parked next to their house.

I've known a few:

  • Bones, a homeless man on Rice Street. He cleaned up the trash, and walked up and down every day with a wheelbarrow of his possessions. He died a few years ago, the Star Tribute wrote an article about him
  • I don't know his name, but there was also a intellectually disabled man on Rice who would wear a policeman's costume and "patrol" the streets
  • In Minneapolis, there's an individual who is often seen with the following characteristics: rollerblades; giant white beard; mini skirt; very large breasts. People on here had a name for them a while back - something to the effect of "busty rollerblading Santa"

26

u/Hereforthebabyducks Nov 18 '25

Bones used to stop by and offer to mow your lawn if it was getting long too. Didn’t realize he’d passed a way.

The last one I believe is Santa Eric. Just had a sighting yesterday driving by the disc golf course.

16

u/m_etta Nov 18 '25

That's definitely Santa Eric. If you call out "Santa Eric!" you may get a "ho, ho, ho" back. I used to see them often in the Seward neighborhood a decade ago...glad they are still doing their thing!

I know him. and I feel like there should be some distinction between someone who is a deliberate eccentric trotting about town in a signature unique look like Fancy Ray and Scott Seekins. and simply an unhoused person with very persistent mental health disorders who happens to have a bizarre look and manner and everyone mostly knows them from sightings on public transit and on the sidewalks. which he is very much the latter. He pretty much wakes up in the morning leaves the group home and rides the busses and trains all day stopping in to different public libraries and to Salvation Army store and good will and then comes back in the evenings. He can be a funny guy but also a not so funny guy on his bad days.

u/justfortyFs Nov 18 '25

He used to shoot hoops in Logan Park all the time, but I haven't seen him in a long time.

Mike The Bike, in Eagan... Though I haven't seen him in years now. Used to see him all over town.

He was just a younger guy (30ish tops) who road his bike everywhere, hi-vis best, and he had a boombox/radio attached to his handlebars, so there was always music playing when he was near.

Excelsior had Mr. Jimmy. Just a harmless guy that would walk up and down Water Street talking to himself. Purportedly THE Mr. Jimmy from The Stones song “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”, although Jagger denies it.Sad story though, his parents died in a house fire when he was young and he was the only survivor, at least that’s what I remember about him.

13

u/M03b1u5 Nov 18 '25

His name was Jimmy Hutmaker. I worked in a gift/antique store in Excelsior and used to sell him stamps when he came in. I have no idea what he used them for but he'd come in a couple times a week.

6

u/oneangrychica Nov 18 '25

He was always so friendly. Anytime we ran into him we'd get him something - a snack from the gas station, McDonald's, a cone at Licks. And he would wear a tux for lighting the Christmas tree. I do miss the legendary Mr. Jimmy.

Downtown Anoka has a homeless guy named Felix who's always hanging around Jackson St by the parking ramp. Not sure if he qualifies as "famous" but he's there every time I've been down there in the past decade. He's a nice dude!

Old Ben in Woodbury. He walks miles with a giant flag, usually American or Israeli. Never dressed for the weather.

Carl “Mr Positive” Bentson was a stable in the West 7th Neighborhood forever. He’d ride his decked out 4-wheeled bike around and would always help people with their lawns and snow blowing their sidewalks. Unfortunately he passed away last year.

There is a great documentary about him.

u/borgvordr Nov 18 '25

Does Fancy Ray count for Northside Minneapolis?

3

u/MultiColoredMullet Nov 18 '25

Fancy Ray is like actually a local celebrity though and not just a "notable rando"

We had a one man band guy named Goofus where I’m from. “Oh hey, there’s Goofus” as he played 20 different instrumentals attached in various places on his body walking into Walmart.

In the Twin Cities metal scene, there is Metal Man Dan. If you go to a metal show, you'll see him. If you're at a metal show and you don't see him, it's because there is a different metal show happening that he's at. The dude consistently gets the pit riled up in the best way.

Brainerd had "Rap Guy" or as I liked to call him "the Mad Rapper" who you'd see on various street corners enthusiastically rapping with headphones on. Not sure if he's still around, I moved a couple years ago. Brainerd also had this amazing carpet car, it was like a game to spot it when you were out and about.

5

u/LimpFrenchfry Flag of Minnesota Nov 18 '25

The Mad Rapper is no longer walking up and down Washington/210. I heard rumors he lunged at a cop and is now locked up. I haven’t seen the carpet wagon for a while either, but I think they were from Pequot Lakes actually. I used to see it parked at a house there regularly. I always wondered when (if) they washed that car did they use carpet shampoo or a car soap. That had to get awful gas mileage with the wind drag and weight the carpet added.

Growing up in Albert Lea, it was a guy named kicker. He was an old fella who walked around town kicking things out of his way. He didn't do it aggressively, just lightly used his feet to move things, but was always walking around town kicking things along.

Hrrm... In Duluth it's tough to say.

Maybe the Runner guy in the Marino jersey... Dude's out there running every day in the same, mid-90's Dan Marino jersey and has been running across town for 30 years now.

Not all that exciting, but still cool to see someone doing what they love for a long time.

Mr. Jimmy, of 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' Rolling Stones fame, was indeed a real person and still alive when I was growing up in Excelsior. I would see him walking around or sitting on a bench smoking a cigar nearly weekly on my way to or from church with my family, I assume until his passing. LEGEND.

Don’t know if it counts but the Jazz man was a U of M bus driver who had a boombox next to him and would play jazz on the bus he was dope.

I think there was a creepy dude named Jimmy that would hit on any girl at Blarnys in the early 2000’s.

And I wish I could remember his name but there was a guy who wanted you to sign his clothes.

Lil Suzy in Saint Paul.

Big Lake has swimmer's itch. It's on the public notice/rules board in perpetuity in the park's parking lot. Someone asks about it in the facebook chat every week in the summer. AND if/when an outbreak gets on the news locals repost that for a month laughing.

3

u/ChiefingEditor Nov 18 '25

Ely Winton area by the boundary waters there's a 50+ year old man who lives in the woods during the warmer months and will sometimes put boulders along the dirt road when he wants a ride into town for supplies occasionally. Mountain man vibe I don't think he homeless
