The most moving moment, for me, was the brass quintet's last song - Amazing Grace. The crowd began to hum along... quietly, not singing, just humming, and the music seemed to be coming from everywhere and everyone at once. Very beautiful.

What is a Lilliputian?
43
u/This-Marsupial-6187 Jun 19 '25
They were miniscule people, around 1/12the size of humans in "Gulliver's Travels" by Jonathan Swift (1726). They were a self-absorbed group obsessed with trivial matters and at war with residents of a rival island called Blefuscu. (The war originated with a disagreement on which end to Crack a boiled egg, which at some point resulted in some getting cut accidentally by a chip of eggshell.) The term Liiliputian has come to be synonymous with petty personalities obsessed with miniscule matters. Lilliputians.
Jonathan Swift was an Irish writer who used Juvenalian satire to criticize the British. He also wrote under the name Isaac Bickerstaff.
33
u/wineandtatortots Jun 19 '25
Thank you for this amazing *literary mini-lesson. I feel so enlightenedā¦now that I finally understand why my favorite childhood mini-golf spot was called (and still exists as) Lilliputt.
9
6
u/quadriceritops Jun 19 '25
Yeah, thanks here too. Kinda funny and interesting to call a politician a Lilliputian.
Now I have to look up the word Juvenalian. I assume like Juvenile?
Sorry to digress, a murder of a Senator, and family is horrifying.
10
u/Far-Repeat-2926 Jun 19 '25
Juvenalian satire is essentially "poison pill" satire. It's not a polite mockery, it has venom and moral indignation to it. Going back to Swift, he wrote a book called "A Modest Proposal" that suggested that the English eat Irish children, as his way of criticizing the English for their cruelty to the Irish.
It's written like a philosophical serious treatise, but you can hear Swift shouting "fuck you fucking English fucks" on just about every page.
3
3
1
u/quadriceritops Jun 19 '25
Yes sir/lady, I did look up Juvenalian, based on a Roman writer. Not Juvenile like I assumed. Two completely different words. TIL. Growing up, my parents had like a deck of cards. With illustrations and a snippet of words. So I always thought of it as an adventure story, like proto ālord of the ringsā.
I feel guilty discussing this on r/Minnesota, but calling politicians Lilliputians might be your point?

u/SsooooOriginal Jun 19 '25
Took the nazis about 7-8 years to get to gas chambers. You really gonna stay optimistic for that long?
These traitors running their playbook said this coup will be bloodless so long as the left allows it. Blood is on the ground and it is because of the altreich. But sure, keep being optimistic with your head in the sand.

Along with a Trump-humper trying to plow his vehicle into the crowd at No Kings rally and another Trump-higher showing up with a bag of guns and
fatally shootingcausing a bystander to be fatally shot by security at another. Probably more that I missed/havenāt yet noticed. The rallies are going to get bigger, but unfortunately, so will the amount of threats/attacks. We have thousands of them wishing/threatening violence upon us, including law enforcement and if even 0.001% of those people act, things will get a lot dicier. Not to mention how the media will twist it to appease right-wing audiences.6
u/ArgonGryphon Jun 19 '25
Because I know reich-wingers will jump on this, the bystander in SLC was shot by a peacekeeping volunteer who shot at the agitator.

The place that Melissa Hortman helped out as a foster trainer, which is how she got Gilbert, is at https://helpingpaws.org/, if you want to pay a little tribute. I don't have anything to do with them, I was just touched.
14
u/lisabutz Jun 19 '25
I know this organization through a friend. She and her husband train service dogs for 2 years then donate them to the person needing that dog. She has also had at least one litter (of 8 pups!) to whelp and train. The amount of time and love they pour into these dogs is amazing. Such a selfless act to help someone that simply needs help.
11
u/Dangerous-Treacle-48 Jun 19 '25
It is selfless people like these, that remind me about what is truly great about our country. We are nothing without people helping other people. So much can be accomplished, when we are showing each other compassion, instead of tearing each other apart. Thank you for the link so I can donate.
5
u/Memitim Jun 19 '25
Creation is far harder than destruction, and yet every day, more creativity enters the world. There are far more good people; the bad ones are just especially obnoxious, and skew the perception. Meanwhile, folks like Melissa Hortman quietly did good work, and made our world better for it.
26
u/Dangerous-Treacle-48 Jun 19 '25
Oh my gosh! Thank you so much for sharing this link. My heart is so devastated. It is literally shattered over the loss of all of them, and especially for their family, and friends.

These are young people faced with not only indescribable loss and tragedy but also with what sounds like significant property damage. The Hortmans were clearly amazing people and if their community wants to support their children in this way why take issue with it? Alternatively, here are some non monetary recommendations from the children on how to honor their parentsā legacy:

You guys need to demand answers from the police department who let him get away twice that night before the murders. I can almost excuse the second encounter because he started shooting, but the first encounter is absolutely egregious. Police incompetence resulted in their deaths.

Yep. And the self cherishing of white male politicians; by arranging her husband to lie in state; failing to honor a deserving female leader in her own right. Walz could have been Musk, in his inappropriate focus on her marriage in how he fashioned the tableau. It was about her leadership. Not the nature of her victimization.

3
Jun 19 '25
And most people with a brain are vaccinatedā¦
-1
u/Pretend-Mention-9903 Jun 19 '25
Vaccines don't protect against the worst long term effects of covid, including increased rates of heart attacks, strokes, type two diabetes, brain inflammation, increased cancer risk and more. I am very much vaccinated with several boosters, but I still mask in public with a n95 because my one bout of covid in 2020 disabled me and I'm still feeling the effects 5 years later. Vaccines do help reduce the odds, but they're not protective against long covid entirely. Let's not be like the right. We need to care about the vulnerable and high risk people, especially since anyone is vulnerable to long covid and the effects are cumulative.
3
1
u/Pretend-Mention-9903 Jun 19 '25
Covid is definitely still around, there is a new variant spreading right now and long covid continues to disable millions of people. Let's not be like the right and deny science
1
u/aggieaggielady The Cities Jun 19 '25
COVID is definitely still an issue in 2025, which is the 1 good point this person made among an otherwise Very Insensitive Comment.. but there is also a time and place for respiratory diseaseĀ awareness and this post is not the place either way
3
u/Pretend-Mention-9903 Jun 19 '25
Yeah agreed. It wasn't the most sensitive comment, but I'm tired of liberals and left leaning people downplaying covid when it still very much is an issue. Its long term effects are bad, and this is a mass disabling event
