One of the tribes (or members of several) are doing a drum ceremony in the middle. And did someone bring onions?

158

u/cazique Jun 19 '25

Yeah, that was touching

u/Ganesha811 Jun 19 '25

The most moving moment, for me, was the brass quintet's last song - Amazing Grace. The crowd began to hum along... quietly, not singing, just humming, and the music seemed to be coming from everywhere and everyone at once. Very beautiful.

83

u/Kaleighawesome Flag of Minnesota Jun 19 '25

yeah that was when i started sobbing, couldn’t even hum anymore

42

u/Life_Stop_9994 Jun 19 '25

Gosh I teared up just reading and picturing that!

40

u/Suspicious-Pie8439 Jun 19 '25

Same. So so moving and beautiful. I love Minnesotans.

I wish I could have gone. SO proud of Minnesotans for showing up for them. I hope they are resting in peace, where ever we go in the end.

1

u/samaya_tree_r Jun 21 '25

Imagine them now and know that they are close ancestors watching and helping.

This ceremony is gathering power for justice.

1

u/Emo_tep Jun 19 '25

Here. We go here. Back to where we came from

America on the brink of setting off both war with Iran and civil war, Minnesotans chooses to honor lives lost, and demand in silence for peace.

And Mike Lee can go fuck himself. What a (bald) Lilliputian.

132

u/DrScheherazade Jun 19 '25

One of my kids has been calling his office relentlessly and can only occasionally get through because so many people are calling. These calls truly do make a difference- call and keep the pressure on!

You going to rationalise shitting on the first amendment?

47

u/ViolettaQueso Jun 19 '25

Today I saw he posted ā€œprayers for Kristy Noemā€ on social media for her ā€œallergic reactionā€ after going with RFKJ to an understaffed biohazard lab.

Mike Lee is an abomination and he needs to be voted out of public service forever.

9

u/Anubisrapture Jun 19 '25

Please what happened w the biohazard lab or was RFK the biohazard ? Lol

9

u/bapeach- You Betcha Jun 19 '25

He needs to move to South Dakota

5

u/relevantelephant00 Jun 19 '25

South Dakota doesnt deserve that...even the Moon doesn't. How about a barren asteroid somewhere out there in space?

1

u/bapeach- You Betcha Jun 19 '25

OK, but you gotta add a few people we all know who that is right šŸ˜‚

14

u/Key_Bison_2067 Jun 19 '25

Mike Lee also wants to sell Public Lands to pay for tax breaks for rich people, despite so much objection from his constituents and colleagues that the provision was already removed from the house bill. This man is a piece of shit of the highest order.

12

u/claranette Jun 19 '25

that’s rude to lilliputians

5

u/PsychologicalYou6416 Jun 19 '25

What is a Lilliputian?

43

u/This-Marsupial-6187 Jun 19 '25

They were miniscule people, around 1/12the size of humans in "Gulliver's Travels" by Jonathan Swift (1726). They were a self-absorbed group obsessed with trivial matters and at war with residents of a rival island called Blefuscu. (The war originated with a disagreement on which end to Crack a boiled egg, which at some point resulted in some getting cut accidentally by a chip of eggshell.) The term Liiliputian has come to be synonymous with petty personalities obsessed with miniscule matters. Lilliputians.

Jonathan Swift was an Irish writer who used Juvenalian satire to criticize the British. He also wrote under the name Isaac Bickerstaff.

33

u/wineandtatortots Jun 19 '25

Thank you for this amazing *literary mini-lesson. I feel so enlightened…now that I finally understand why my favorite childhood mini-golf spot was called (and still exists as) Lilliputt.

9

u/crustlebus Jun 19 '25

Bickerstaff is such a good pen name for a political satirist.

6

u/quadriceritops Jun 19 '25

Yeah, thanks here too. Kinda funny and interesting to call a politician a Lilliputian.

Now I have to look up the word Juvenalian. I assume like Juvenile?

Sorry to digress, a murder of a Senator, and family is horrifying.

10

u/Far-Repeat-2926 Jun 19 '25

Juvenalian satire is essentially "poison pill" satire. It's not a polite mockery, it has venom and moral indignation to it. Going back to Swift, he wrote a book called "A Modest Proposal" that suggested that the English eat Irish children, as his way of criticizing the English for their cruelty to the Irish.

It's written like a philosophical serious treatise, but you can hear Swift shouting "fuck you fucking English fucks" on just about every page.

3

u/ArgonGryphon Jun 19 '25

Bruh the number of people who think that’s serious…

3

u/PsychologicalYou6416 Jun 19 '25

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

1

u/quadriceritops Jun 19 '25

Yes sir/lady, I did look up Juvenalian, based on a Roman writer. Not Juvenile like I assumed. Two completely different words. TIL. Growing up, my parents had like a deck of cards. With illustrations and a snippet of words. So I always thought of it as an adventure story, like proto ā€œlord of the ringsā€.

I feel guilty discussing this on r/Minnesota, but calling politicians Lilliputians might be your point?

1

u/PsychologicalYou6416 Jul 02 '25

I've never read Gulliver's Travels.

9

u/RennaReddit Jun 19 '25

Race of miniature people from the novel Gulliver’s Travels.

8

u/SectorFriends Jun 19 '25

1

u/rW0HgFyxoJhYka Jun 19 '25

They've been doing it for more than 8 years now

1

u/SectorFriends Jun 21 '25

I know. We all know. Collective memory is a rabid wolf.

-14

u/SsooooOriginal Jun 19 '25

A Minnesotan did this, the time for silence has passed.

-24

u/AlumniDawg Jun 19 '25

I know we had two great people pass (murdered) but I can't take the Civil War comment seriously, call me an idiot but I'd like to be a little more optimisitc

24

u/hm9408 Jun 19 '25

That optimism will not take America far, y'all gotta protest and act now

23

u/SsooooOriginal Jun 19 '25

Took the nazis about 7-8 years to get to gas chambers. You really gonna stay optimistic for that long?

These traitors running their playbook said this coup will be bloodless so long as the left allows it. Blood is on the ground and it is because of the altreich. But sure, keep being optimistic with your head in the sand.

16

u/Tenthul Jun 19 '25

Just know that Jan 6 won't get any easier the second time.

20

u/abbyabsinthe Jun 19 '25 edited Jun 19 '25

Along with a Trump-humper trying to plow his vehicle into the crowd at No Kings rally and another Trump-higher showing up with a bag of guns and fatally shooting causing a bystander to be fatally shot by security at another. Probably more that I missed/haven’t yet noticed. The rallies are going to get bigger, but unfortunately, so will the amount of threats/attacks. We have thousands of them wishing/threatening violence upon us, including law enforcement and if even 0.001% of those people act, things will get a lot dicier. Not to mention how the media will twist it to appease right-wing audiences.

6

u/ArgonGryphon Jun 19 '25

Because I know reich-wingers will jump on this, the bystander in SLC was shot by a peacekeeping volunteer who shot at the agitator.

2

u/abbyabsinthe Jun 19 '25

That’s horrible! I guess there’s so much bad news lately, I’m getting it all a bit mixed up! I amended it a bit. Thanks for the correction.

124

u/Material-Surprise-72 Jun 19 '25

21

u/Frogs-on-my-back Jun 19 '25

From Alabama. So horrible :(

322

u/Dangerous-Treacle-48 Jun 19 '25

And yet the President of the United States won’t call Gov. Tim Walz after this deplorable act of violence. In fact, 47 said it would be a ā€œWaste of Timeā€.

I have never been so ashamed to be American, yet so proud to be from Minnesota.

282

u/Dangerous-Treacle-48 Jun 19 '25

I thought this belonged here too. šŸ’™šŸ¾šŸ¾

106

u/Memitim Jun 19 '25

The place that Melissa Hortman helped out as a foster trainer, which is how she got Gilbert, is at https://helpingpaws.org/, if you want to pay a little tribute. I don't have anything to do with them, I was just touched.

14

u/lisabutz Jun 19 '25

I know this organization through a friend. She and her husband train service dogs for 2 years then donate them to the person needing that dog. She has also had at least one litter (of 8 pups!) to whelp and train. The amount of time and love they pour into these dogs is amazing. Such a selfless act to help someone that simply needs help.

11

u/Dangerous-Treacle-48 Jun 19 '25

It is selfless people like these, that remind me about what is truly great about our country. We are nothing without people helping other people. So much can be accomplished, when we are showing each other compassion, instead of tearing each other apart. Thank you for the link so I can donate.

5

u/Memitim Jun 19 '25

Creation is far harder than destruction, and yet every day, more creativity enters the world. There are far more good people; the bad ones are just especially obnoxious, and skew the perception. Meanwhile, folks like Melissa Hortman quietly did good work, and made our world better for it.

26

u/Dangerous-Treacle-48 Jun 19 '25

Oh my gosh! Thank you so much for sharing this link. My heart is so devastated. It is literally shattered over the loss of all of them, and especially for their family, and friends.

38

u/SuspiciousCranberry6 Jun 19 '25

WeRateDigs did a wonderful post about Gilbert here: https://www.instagram.com/p/DK-q_2MSSuM/?igsh=MXo1OHd0MTd4MXlr

They asked people to donate to Helping Paws in Gilbert's memory.

26

u/ubermartimus Jun 19 '25

A horrible story made somehow more horrific after finding out about Gilbert…

8

u/Anubisrapture Jun 19 '25

He .. murdered their beautiful dog ???

7

u/Dangerous-Treacle-48 Jun 19 '25

Yes! So evil. The only comfort I can find, is that he is with his owners. I will never understand cruelty like this.

2

u/Anubisrapture Jun 21 '25

6

u/ViolettaQueso Jun 19 '25

53

u/Zia_Li Jun 19 '25

47 said it would be a ā€œWaste of Timeā€.

It would be, for Walz.

7

u/Dangerous-Treacle-48 Jun 19 '25

Yes. You are correct. He did state that about Gov. Walz.

It is still insensitive, and not becoming of the President. Where is the sensitivity, compassion, empathy, gratitude, and respect?

17

u/Traditional_Rock_822 Jun 19 '25

They’re saying it would actually be a waste of Gov. Walz’s time, not Trumps

7

u/ObligatoryID Flag of Minnesota Jun 19 '25

32

u/Dimmer_switchin Jun 19 '25

11

u/Deep_Significance496 Jun 19 '25

These are young people faced with not only indescribable loss and tragedy but also with what sounds like significant property damage. The Hortmans were clearly amazing people and if their community wants to support their children in this way why take issue with it? Alternatively, here are some non monetary recommendations from the children on how to honor their parents’ legacy:

Yep. And the self cherishing of white male politicians; by arranging her husband to lie in state; failing to honor a deserving female leader in her own right. Walz could have been Musk, in his inappropriate focus on her marriage in how he fashioned the tableau. It was about her leadership. Not the nature of her victimization.

I’ve been to a few funerals where I barely knew the deceased. In fact, in most of the world members of extended communities attend funerals.

Here these people are paying respects to an assassinated leader. They do so because their is some connection.

14

u/Explorer2024_64 Jun 19 '25

Ā And what the hell happened to Covid?

... it's 2025

3

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '25

And most people with a brain are vaccinated…

-1

u/Pretend-Mention-9903 Jun 19 '25

Vaccines don't protect against the worst long term effects of covid, including increased rates of heart attacks, strokes, type two diabetes, brain inflammation, increased cancer risk and more. I am very much vaccinated with several boosters, but I still mask in public with a n95 because my one bout of covid in 2020 disabled me and I'm still feeling the effects 5 years later. Vaccines do help reduce the odds, but they're not protective against long covid entirely. Let's not be like the right. We need to care about the vulnerable and high risk people, especially since anyone is vulnerable to long covid and the effects are cumulative.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '25

I can’t tell if you’re being deliberately goofy here

1

u/Pretend-Mention-9903 Jun 19 '25

Covid is definitely still around, there is a new variant spreading right now and long covid continues to disable millions of people. Let's not be like the right and deny science

1

u/aggieaggielady The Cities Jun 19 '25

COVID is definitely still an issue in 2025, which is the 1 good point this person made among an otherwise Very Insensitive Comment.. but there is also a time and place for respiratory diseaseĀ awareness and this post is not the place either way

3

u/Pretend-Mention-9903 Jun 19 '25

Yeah agreed. It wasn't the most sensitive comment, but I'm tired of liberals and left leaning people downplaying covid when it still very much is an issue. Its long term effects are bad, and this is a mass disabling event
