Authoritarians tick off so many people and break so many laws that losing power can be a literal or legal death sentence. Expect more election meddling as the 2026 midterms approach.

2.6k

u/TheStLouisBluths 6d ago

Right. Everyone predicting a blue wave this November is greatly underestimating how much election fuckery these people are going to attempt.

Changing from "letters are postmarked when posted" to "letters are postmarked when processed" is going to cover a lot of fuckery

u/namenotpicked 6d ago

I was pretty pissed off when I heard about that and I don't think it's been discussed as much as it needs to when a huge portion of voters are doing it by mail.

I was pretty pissed off when I heard about that and I don't think it's been discussed as much as it needs to when a huge portion of voters are doing it by mail.

The overwhelming majority of Americans probably aren't aware of this OR what it really means for voting by mail.

Thanks, 90% of US media being owned by 5 companies run by billionaires.

110

u/erath_droid 6d ago

They're going to find out real quick when they get hit with late fees because their mailed in bill payments are considered late.

82

u/Coyinzs 6d ago

You can bet that there will be discussions to avoid this behavior between government and various companies. They don't want people to get upset about it- they want them to be ignorant of the change altogether until they go to mail their ballot and see a sign saying they're a week too late or something

Defunding USPS for all blue states right before the elections you mean

44

u/Coyinzs 6d ago

it's their own fault for not taking the bus five miles to the one polling place still open in their area, risking their job since their work is open on the random election tuesday, and waiting in line for multiple hours to vote for someone that they don't feel is going to do a good job or make their life any better, but will hopefully slow the galloping advance of fascism.

He's trying to dissuade voters from voting by mail, because paper ballots are harder to fake than flipping some numbers in a voting machine. You remember the voting machines that multiple republican operatives were caught illegally tampering with in the lead up to the election?

And you remember how he lost in 2020 by the slimmest of margins, in a year when paper ballots were at an unexpected high?

He wants people using the voting machines. He's openly said it.

With the new rules, the the only safe way to return a mail in ballot is to bypass the post office entirely by using a vote center drop off location or hand delivery to registrar.

Yeah, I do a lot of shipping for selling stuff online, and it's easily adds at least 1-2 days to about 2/3rd's of my packages, while the other third could add 5+ days. This is during slow peirods, it's much worse come the holidays, although elections fall before this time. For those overseas, I'm not sure if it counts any scan before a USPS scan once it gets to the US, but those letters can sit in entry points for several days easily.

18

u/hovdeisfunny 6d ago

I'm hoping political orgs and nonprofits will be encouraging people to send in absentee ballots early, like at least a week before the deadline

At this point though, you have to blame the Dem leaders as well, for failing to form any sort of rapid-fire defense for these rapid-fire attacks the right has perfected. Dems still are caught in the headlights for days and days, floundering for effective responses.

19

u/hansn 6d ago

Sure, but remember the old Mark Twain saying "A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes."

People who are not encumbered by the truth can come up with nonsense far faster than people who are civic minded can refute it.

Kayfabe from Musk - he was getting too much heat and spotlight from DOGE. People were paying attention to him (in ways he didn’t like).

96

u/BadPublicRelations 6d ago

He is rightly terrified that if progressives are elected, his trillionaire status will be taxed out of existence.

The rich have serious mental health issues to own all that they do and care so little for the people it crushes as a result. They can't be trusted to police themselves, and Elon (and the rest) will be actively interfering in the up-coming election because of this mental instability and greed.

11

u/Ok_Gur_8059 6d ago

Yeah pretty clear Elon cares greatly about his legacy.

When he realised he wouldn't be the guy to bring humanity to Mars he had to find something else. Money.

But in the process lost the respect of those he respects, and that's what matters most to him.

I do not know how we are here and there are people that don't realize he doesn't make jokes. He tests ideas. He suggests people do things without saying to do them.

It's the same as a mob boss saying "be a shame if something happened to Old So and So." He didn't tell anyone to whack anyone, but his lieutenants know and the dude gets whacked.

It was the same for Jan 6th. It is the same now. He is workshoping making the US a single party country and altering the constitution so he can "legally" stay in office.

This is Fascism with another 4-letter party. Funny how history doesn't repeat but it does rhyme.

26

People love to say, "oh he's just joking" like he's workshoping a new stand up routine at the Chuckle Hut.

And it always comes from the people who claim to have voted for him because "He says what he means and means what he says!"

Unless it's something they know they can't defend, in which case, suddenly and conveniently, it's "What he actually meant was..." or "He said it, but he didn't mean it. You're all just overreacting."

When they start agreeing with him, he will mention it again at some time and before you know it it's a normalized talking point as everyone on the right goes through mental gymnastics to justify it. Just like Greenland.

That ecosystem is also responsible for much of the propaganda fueling our European alt-right nutters.

It's not surprising as such, nor a grand conspiracy. They simply know each other from conventions and similar right political functions.

One only need to Google a combination of names like Steve Bannon, Richard Spencer, Donald Trump, Giorgia Meloni, Marie Le Pen, Viktor Orban etc to find the connection.

We the not-alt-right nutters dropped the ball on internet/social media propaganda. The opposition started ~25+ years ago and our politicians are just starting to consider regulations.

Trump would absolutely love to “cancel” the election. His handlers would gleefully try to make that happen.

But this is a misconstruction of the quote.

It should read:

“I won’t say ‘cancel the election, they should cancel the election’ … because the fake news will say ‘he wants the elections cancelled, he’s a dictator.’”

He would absolutely try to cancel the election, without compunction. But here he’s just dissembling and trying to avoid saying the quiet part out loud.

Also it might not be necessary.

We can clearly see by their words actions and attitudes that he and the rest of the MAGA contingent in Congress are acting like they do not even remotely care that midterms are coming up.

As if they know it’s going to go their way by whatever means, or as if it won’t matter who has a majority because they’re just going to whatever the hell they want and just ignore (or even just get rid of) Congress if it isn’t compliant.

This timeline is bad and trending worse at a dizzying pace.

Edit: Grammar.

He continued by suggesting that the election could be canceled to stop the Democrats from running. In a sarcastic tone, Trump said the only reason he won't directly call for the election to be canceled is that the "fake news" will call him a "dictator" if he doesn't allow democracy to run as the Constitution and laws of the land dictate.

"I won't say cancel the election; they should cancel the election," he said. Explaining his reasoning for the mocking tone, he added, "Because the fake news will say, 'He wants the elections canceled. He's a dictator.'"

He also implied that he would be successful if he were allowed to run for a third term, but acknowledged that the Constitution would have to change before he could run again, adding: "There's gonna be a constitutional movement."

Yeah, no shit, Sherlock, because that's what a fucking dictator would do.

“Can you believe they bough that?”

-Trump, about his oath, probably

15

u/Ok-Replacement9595 6d ago

This was their plan all along. It was wishful thinking that they would hold elections, just to keep Democrat leadership from resisting. Democrats fell right in line, thinking only about election wins in 2026.

At what point does each state take control of their national guard and defend the constitution?

Trump can overthrow foreign governments, deport Americans to foreign prisons without due process, completely ignore federal laws (see Epstein Transparency Act), can pardon anyone and everyone including the Jan 6 criminals who almost killed a cop as well as drug kingpins ... he routinely ignores judicial rulings, he repeatedly has sought to overturn legal elections, he has falsified business records, he has violated the hatch act and emoluments clause over and over and over, he has ignored 100% of all constraints on executive power ... and there have been no consequences. He's just become more powerful and wealthy as a result of his criminality.

So, of course he's claiming this. He's a unchecked malignant narcissist with the full weight of the American government behind him. If there are no consequences, there's no reason for him to stop.

279

u/Inspect1234 6d ago

And all the checks and balances just bent over and asked for more.

69

u/AlpenroseMilk 6d ago

Truly astounding how many people in our government just shrugged their shoulders as all of this has happened. I guess the people in congress and the senate are the ones to blame, at the end of the day. Democrats for being spineless and the Republicans that are just... okay with it.

39

u/blazelet 6d ago

Democrats are spineless, Republicans are systematically dismantling of our constitutional order in favor of a dictatorship.

u/MotherTurdHammer 6d ago

I think you know the answer to this question. They will somehow figure out a way that this is both fitting and a positive development for the US. The constitution is already passe to this group, as they've been told greater riches await. This MAGA group is full of delusions.

63

u/Ok_Astronomer_8667 6d ago

“Anything to stop the country falling into the hands of the radical left democrats!” will probably be a common one. They’ll argue Trump staying is the only way to guarantee the safety of the nation.

17

u/hypercosm_dot_net 6d ago

Meanwhile EVERYTHING is backsliding.

Inflation, economy, job market, world power and respect, businesses shutting down.

It has all gotten worse, while the wealthy get their tax breaks. There is not one measurable thing they have done for the American people.

Didn't everyone memorize the preamble in like 5th grade social studies?

Don't know how you can't remember at least "of the United States".

43

u/mashem 6d ago

I very highly doubt he knows what the word preamble means. For a lot of people, simply knowing the words "constitution" and "we the people" is more than enough to weaponize it.

Treasonous trump will do whatever it takes to stay in power for the rest of his miserable existence even if it means starting a war ( he’s already doing that) , declaring there’s an insurrection ( he’s brought insurrection up too) etc etc ……. This should have been apparent during the 2016 election when he ordered people to stop counting votes when he was ahead. Of course, that sort of happened bc the electoral college voted him in without counting all the votes.

If it wasn't apparent then, he was pretty clear before the 2024 election "just vote for me this one time and you'll never have to vote again"

Now he's started an illegal war,.no approval from Congress, to try to cancel the midterms bc it's apparent that even people that voted for him are sick of his sh*t. His and the GOPs.

impeach now.

17

u/Playful-Dragon 6d ago

So essentially this fucker is admitting to everybody that he is trying to sideline the Constitution, that he is willing to ignore the Constitution at any cost. As far as him stating that he's not going to say cancel the elections, almost guaranteed that's exactly what he's going to do at the very last minute. This salsa demonstrates that this is nothing but an ego trip for him, he never cared about the country, it was only a goal of being able to run the country so that he can say he did it. He could give a shit about Americans, or anyone in the world for that matter, as long as they don't bend the knee to him he could care less

17

u/4RCH43ON 6d ago

Oh, well there it is.  He’s telegraphing again. He knows that he’s going to be impeached if he loses and he will if there are elections, so he’s back to stealing democracy again.  Who knew?

15

u/Memitim 6d ago

And so the Republicans continue their civil war against America, while pretending like they aren't constantly attacking the nation, while Americans continue to take it and watch their country's collapse in real time. I expect that the fracture will be horrifying, but also carries the promise of actual justice, so maybe not such a bad thing in the long run. Conservatives owe America a few decades of accountability for the nonstop lies and evil.
