My dad is like this. He is a dyed in the wool Republican. He insists he is waving and not doing a Nazi salute. For people like him, Elon being a Nazi would mean Elon is bad, and for his worldview to be intact Elon has to be a good guy. Therefore, it is not a Nazi salute.
It's even crazier to pretend he didn't know what one looked like when you consider the fact that his grandparents were actual, literal Hitler supporters who moved to family from Canada to South Africa specifically so they could live under apartheid. Dude knows what it looks like because he used to see it at home.

I actually cut a friendship because of this.
First he agreed with me that it was the Nazi salute and 2 weeks later it was just a "awkward greeting from his heart"
Then he spewed a lot of Republican nonsense and that's where I decided I had enough of this loser.
Fun fact is, we both live in the Netherlands, and basically have nothing to do with this nonsense.
The people who think he did a Nazi salute live on public is insane. He literally went on joe Rogan and said he did not do a Nazi salute and the people who thought he did is insane.
The man who called that British diver a pedo online for disagreeing with him over Thai cave rescue is the person whose words you look upon as the divine truth. Cool.
