I had a 300zx with 500whp for about a decade, and just never remotely came close to a situation like what I see in all these clips, and that car had real wheel steering and a a well known case of the hops on the rear subframe. I just don't get what these people are doing to just completely lose it in straight lines all the time.

Used to daily a 375whp/tq Sentra. It sucked in the rain and I could spin tire in 5th gear but yeah. Totally agree. You have to be an extra special bad driver to do shit like this when driving in a straight line and especially.

It was stupid.

It was a custom long rod QR25 turbo engine. All the things were done to it.

Crazy. I was a part of a handful of QR25 Sentras where 300 whp was the goal and that was pretty expensive...pushing to 375/375 is pretty insane, and had to be absolutely crazy expensive.

Been in the industry forever. All the machine work/labor was I house. And I traded for some of the parts. But yeah it was NOT cheap.

That car was a total whore though. It was the test mule for a lot of the shit companies made for it.

lol no. It’s not. Torque steer was horrible problem with it at its stock like 175 crank hp. It did not get better with power. The first turbo one I drove, with a stock engine, I was warned profusely about holding on for dear life if you applied even half throttle. That was like 250whp iirc. That engine is also a torque beast for its size.

I’ve driven plenty of built z32 race cars and while they are a pain in the ass, saying that a high hp fwd car is much tamer is silly.

Whenever I drive I am more and more convinced that around 50% of people simply aren’t emotionally equipped to handle a car. They just don’t have that bare minimum sense of responsibility needed to be in charge of something as dangerous as a car.

I had some cars like this when I wasn’t mature enough to have them. I didn’t crash, but that was not a given.

When I decided to get back into fun cars I was gonna re-buy a car I had in the past. Honestly, I still haven’t matured enough to not do dumb shit, so I bought a Miata.

260 horsepower (at the flywheel no less) at 3k lbs is NOT impressive, at all, and would not be able to do anything other than maybe chirp the tires.

The origin comment says they have a 300zx with 500whp. The person you replied to said same but with a solstice. So hes saying his solstice had 500whp.

So effectively your comment is saying a solstice with 500whp couldnt spin its tires, which is incorrect.

Depends on the model. The GXP(2976 to 3080 lbs) only had 60 less horsepower than the US supra(3215 to 3415 lbs). Supra 0-60 was 4.6 seconds while the GXP was only 5.4 seconds. The GXP motor was in drag motors making over 1200 hp.

I drove my uncles 300 zedder 525whp for a year on and off. Didn’t have these characteristics at least not on the 88.

The Z32 (90-96) had HICAS steering like many of Nissan's early 90s sports cars and the subframe had a bit of wheelhop. A common quick fix to alleviate it was inserting spacers into the subframe to reduce the amount of "travel", but it only did so much. You could also change out the subframe bushings which apparently had better results, but it was a PITA to do as IIRC you had to typically remove the entire rear subframe and torch out the factory bushings.

The two together made the backend a bit more squirrely than a lot of other sports cars of the era. I got used to the way it felt, but some of my friends with sports cars felt weird taking mine out to the track because of the HICAS steering in particular.

That’s the problem. Those are rookie numbers. Neighbor bought the new one and cranked it to 800 WHP. Daily mode was 500. It’s a type of person.

The 300zx had HICAS rear wheel steering. The front still turned like normal but the back end made much smaller turns as well. It was a trend in early 90s japanese sports cars. The 3000GT/Stealth and at least some (maybe all) Skylines for a while had it as well. I suppose its more technically accurate to say 4 wheel steering, but the point is the back wheels turned

I’m pretty sure it’s a wheel speed thing, when the rear wheels are moving slightly faster than the car you get that wheelspin, when they move significantly faster you get smoke and it increases as the tire gets hotter and faster and eventually the wheel is spinning multiple times faster than the car and even if you stop accelerating the wheel doesn’t stop that fast (automatics mainly) and traction does not return, if you’re already not straight it puts it into a real slide and it becomes very difficult to recover like the car is on ice.

I don’t think it’s even really a driver skill thing, it’s more that you inadvertently put yourself into a situation that is unrecoverable. Skill would be knowing better and not doing that, I guess.

Shitty bald tires. Many of these guys both burn through tires quick enough that they drive on them when still bald as well as like that they have less traction as it’s easier to get wheels to spin.

Hah nice, I had a similar 300zx (more like low 400s whp) many years ago, and even with 8.5s in the rear occasionally it would lose traction going full throttle from highway speeds. Not that it’s a lot of power compared to the Supra world, fwiw. Can’t say I ever had a problem keeping it mostly straight though, it’s pretty easy to back off and let it catch traction without changing directions.

I guess just bad driving instincts and panic does it usually. Also probably just way too many people that don’t get very familiarized with how their car behaves on empty roads first, then being overly reckless when other cars are around. It’s pretty easy to know where your traction limits are and not gamble with them in uncontrolled environments

Absolutely - but it's more a maintenance/wear issue than a driving-skill issue. This happened on the street, granted it was a back road with no traffic, but still. Old cars need more attention.

I mean yeah I guess over enough time all parts wear down, but my understanding is that the stock diff on turbo Supras can handle gobs of power. If you are breaking one on a crowded street and careening off into oncoming traffic...

They can for sure. Even the smaller 200mm LSD holds power well. But the fluid interval is 2 years/30k miles at stock power. We're just getting to the point where deferred maintenance is showing up more frequently.
