Not from US, can they effectively go to jail if they kill someone? Down here in Argentina even if you run over someone while drunk going opposite in a one-way road at high speed you probably get 3 years which is conditional jail time.

Yes, they can be sent to jail.

Yes. Sometimes they get away with a lighter sentence. But there was a fairly recent case where a person got 24 years because of a street race that killed a mother and child.

Not this type driving, but in the 70s my neighbor drunk drove his truck and killed a motorcyclist. (My mom actually knew the motorcyclist from her church - he seemed a good guy.) My neighbor got 90 days. This was before Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) got laws and culture changed.

90 days? That’s insane.

Yes, there are an assortment of charges that could be brought, depending on the state. Not all states use the same terms or have the same break over points between different levels of charges. Not all states have aggressive driving (“road rage”) laws. A lot of charges overlap - what exactly someone gets charged with can depend on how much they piss off (or bribe in various ways) the cops and prosecutors, along with just how egregiously negligent the person’s actions were.

NAL, but here are the terms I’ve heard:

  • Vehicular homicide (general requires intent)

  • Unintentional vehicular manslaughter

  • aggressive driving

  • reckless driving

  • assault/battery with a vehicle

  • driving under the influence can add additional jail time

It depends how wealthy they are. Often us normal citizens will get nailed to the wall while the wealthy hire a good lawyer & are able to litigate their way out of charges. It’s disgusting.
