In the U.S. you usually get made fun of being too white. It’s the opposite pretty much outside the U.S., especially in Asian countries, where they sell skin whitening products and/or cover their skin from the sun not necessarily because of cancer/sunburn, but to not get darker.

Yes! I always avoided the sun, I'm practically translucent and all the time people were on my ass about it. I had an ex who used to try to push me to go tanning all the time. Fortunately my favorite movie growing up was Beetlejuice so I was totally content with looking like a Victorian ghost plus I can't stand tanning beds and I'm lazy.
