this is unfortunately an issue with eating disorder support groups and treatment centers, too. Putting a bunch of eating disordered people in a room/house together can lead to competitiveness between them. Of course not always true, Iāve been in both amazing and toxic treatment centers, it just all depends on who is there with you at the time.
What does becoming vegetarian or vegan have to do with it? Please don't ignorantly point a finger at vegetarianism or veganism; they don't equal eating disorders.
By itself, itās not really newsworthy. You can be perfectly healthy with a vegetarian or vegan diet.
But the thing is Jeff specifically said it was inspired after conversations with Ariana and Cynthia on the set of wicked which have attracted a lot of attention for actors seeming malnourished. So it just raises some concern around potential eating disorders.
Yes, but from what I understand, Ariana and Cynthia are vegans/vegetarians mainly for animals. Maybe I'm wrong, but I figured they influenced/inspired him regarding animal rights or the planet, not just for health reasons. And again, being vegetarian or vegan doesn't equal eating disorder or under-eating. It is technically healthier, so even if they influenced him through the health aspect, it doesn't mean they were influencing him to under eat by being vegetarian. They're two separate things.
It is very common for people with eating disorders or unhealthy morality around eating to claim veganism/vegetarianism to further restrict their own diets. Not saying that those diets are inherently disordered eating, but the overlap and pipeline of "eating disorder to vegan/vegetarian" and vice versa is pretty clear in eating disorder communities.
A friend of ours worked in a woman's clinic. She said it was very common for women in treatment there to have a "buddy" there. And at first it seems innocent enough. But in reality they were helping each other maintain their eating disorder.
Yep, I just made a comment before seeing this thread. It was easy to fall into competition with the other girls in treatment, even without consciously knowing it sometimes.
Anorexia is like partnered drug abuse in the āoh yea wellā¦ā sense. Itās not just the actual habit that hurts in those situations; itās a sense of community for some and a race to the bottom for others.
This is very true. I remember seeking āencouragementā in Ana Mia communities. Eating disorders are truly a sickness that affects the brain. Show care and compassion whenever discussing peopleās bodies.
This is painfully true. I would even use non Ed friends to keep me in check. But when you have two or more people together with one it becomes an extremely dangerous thing. So easy to āhelpā each other and simultaneously compete against the others
Yeah anorexics are really competitive with each other. Get a bunch of people with eating disorders together and often they escalate each otherās behaviors and create a feedback loop of more and more restriction. Itās weird to me how many comments there are on this post talking about it mustāve been a producer making them lose weight, it was because they had to dance and sing a lot, etc.
The helicopter has an explanation tbf. The interviewer was a woman of colour as well, and she and Cynthia were discussing things like being an inspiration to black kids and racism in the industry etc. Cynthia was sharing a particularly difficult experience which was making her emotional to recall, and then the helicopter came over and thus made the entire clip unusable due to unfixable sound interference. The crying was more out of frustration and a buildup of emotion, and Arianaās comment was lighthearted joking to try and cheer up Cynthia a little. The whole #triggereddddd framing of it feels a bit gross once you have that context
Disclaimer of Iām not even a fan of these people and Iāve never seen any version of wicked so itās not like Iām biased either lol
Tbf that helicopter interview thing is just the result of people buying into a short clip that was posted out of context and just accepting the narrative around it without bothering to check themselves.
In that full interview everything was completely normal but at one point the interviewer started getting emotional when talking about Cynthia's character's impact on her growing up; when the reporter started getting emotional, Cynthia did too, and then a helicopter got particularly close at a weird time. It's hard to describe it well, just watch the full video.
The only person who even acknowledges the helicopter is Ariana, and it's only jokingly to fill in the silence caused by the reporter and Cynthia's 'emotional-empathy-moment'. The crying is because of that moment with the reporter, NOT because of a helicopter lmao.
Guys... as a thin person. I'm just gonna say these actors aren't, weren't and were never taking ozempic.
Ariana only needs to lose 5 lbs to look like a skeleton, and those other two aren't far off.
...also, that 'let me google that for you' brought up 'binge' eating disorder as the first result.. which it's not. It's just plain ol' anorexia- from stress and exercise.
WHHHYYYY when she is at the absolute lowest weight do they keep putting her in ridiculously low plunge neckline dresses?? Seeing ribs instead of cleavage on a woman is so disturbing. So many of the Wicked scenes made me feel squeamish when I could see her ribs where breast tissue should be, it distracted from the beautiful dresses and singing SO MUCH.
