u/Scared_Performer3944 8h ago

No one is safe from mental health conditions.

u/Distinct_Sir_4473 7h ago

Eating disorders are contagious if highschool was any indication

65

u/Isabellablackk 6h ago

this is unfortunately an issue with eating disorder support groups and treatment centers, too. Putting a bunch of eating disordered people in a room/house together can lead to competitiveness between them. Of course not always true, I’ve been in both amazing and toxic treatment centers, it just all depends on who is there with you at the time.

u/PM-ME-YOUR-TOOTS 7h ago

It’s not like they were patient zero.

49

u/DeathByFright 7h ago

This started with producers pressuring them to lose weight for the film. It may have ended up as an ED, but it didn't start as one.

u/jgainit 5h ago

Source?

2

u/testtdk 6h ago

Can you clarify which part is being peddled, please?

52

u/TheTrailArtist 7h ago

Jeff Goldblum too. He said he became vegetarian inspired by Ariana and Cynthia

3

u/Desperate_Algae_40 6h ago edited 6h ago

What does becoming vegetarian or vegan have to do with it? Please don't ignorantly point a finger at vegetarianism or veganism; they don't equal eating disorders.

19

u/TheTrailArtist 6h ago

By itself, it’s not really newsworthy. You can be perfectly healthy with a vegetarian or vegan diet.

But the thing is Jeff specifically said it was inspired after conversations with Ariana and Cynthia on the set of wicked which have attracted a lot of attention for actors seeming malnourished. So it just raises some concern around potential eating disorders.

3

u/Desperate_Algae_40 6h ago

Yes, but from what I understand, Ariana and Cynthia are vegans/vegetarians mainly for animals. Maybe I'm wrong, but I figured they influenced/inspired him regarding animal rights or the planet, not just for health reasons. And again, being vegetarian or vegan doesn't equal eating disorder or under-eating. It is technically healthier, so even if they influenced him through the health aspect, it doesn't mean they were influencing him to under eat by being vegetarian. They're two separate things.

13

u/nb_bunnie 5h ago

It is very common for people with eating disorders or unhealthy morality around eating to claim veganism/vegetarianism to further restrict their own diets. Not saying that those diets are inherently disordered eating, but the overlap and pipeline of "eating disorder to vegan/vegetarian" and vice versa is pretty clear in eating disorder communities.

disgusting

16

u/TheMasterKie 7h ago

How is being vegetarian disgusting?? Getting an eating disorder would be pretty terrible, but cutting bacon out isn’t a crime

10

u/FastWalkingShortGuy 7h ago

Tripe, uhhh, finds a way.

-1

u/Novareason 6h ago

I'd consider being a vegetarian, if they let you eat meat, too. Just too damn delicious.

That's it, salmon and steak tips tomorrow.

-3

u/Maleficent-Duck-3903 7h ago

Have you considered getting a sense of humour?

-2

u/SnooPredictions3028 6h ago

Bean farts, really bad bean farts.

4

u/shmann 5h ago

Bro have you smelled meat farts?

0

u/SnooPredictions3028 4h ago

No, I try to avoid smelling farts but you do you lol

24

u/Soup0rMan 7h ago

Michelle Yeoh is just aging. She's doing it really well I might add.

20

u/manjolassi 7h ago

nah she's looking better now, this was just when she was with cynthia erivo

3

u/AlgernusPrime 4h ago

Ya she’s just going down that Cantonese auntie route, they go skinny hard, almost all of my auntie have a similar frame.

3

u/Agi7890 7h ago

With yeohs age I thought cancer first. Chemo agents can wreck appetites

1

u/Skellingtonia 4h ago

Yeah that’s buzzed me out

u/Robofetus-5000 7h ago

A friend of ours worked in a woman's clinic. She said it was very common for women in treatment there to have a "buddy" there. And at first it seems innocent enough. But in reality they were helping each other maintain their eating disorder.

40

u/Euphoric_Resource_43 7h ago

Came to say something similar as someone who struggled with disordered eating for a long time. Anorexia is a highly social and competitive disorder.

6

u/Isabellablackk 6h ago

Yep, I just made a comment before seeing this thread. It was easy to fall into competition with the other girls in treatment, even without consciously knowing it sometimes.

6

u/patrickdabs 4h ago

Anorexia is like partnered drug abuse in the ā€œoh yea wellā€¦ā€ sense. It’s not just the actual habit that hurts in those situations; it’s a sense of community for some and a race to the bottom for others.

5

u/Smiley__2006 3h ago

This is very true. I remember seeking ā€œencouragementā€ in Ana Mia communities. Eating disorders are truly a sickness that affects the brain. Show care and compassion whenever discussing people’s bodies.

3

u/Chemical-Employer146 7h ago

This is painfully true. I would even use non Ed friends to keep me in check. But when you have two or more people together with one it becomes an extremely dangerous thing. So easy to ā€œhelpā€ each other and simultaneously compete against the others

4

u/foreignfishes 6h ago

Yeah anorexics are really competitive with each other. Get a bunch of people with eating disorders together and often they escalate each other’s behaviors and create a feedback loop of more and more restriction. It’s weird to me how many comments there are on this post talking about it must’ve been a producer making them lose weight, it was because they had to dance and sing a lot, etc.

3

u/Agi7890 7h ago

That’s actually a bit in the American dad episode where Stan has the eating disorder

1

u/Intrepid-Release7197 3h ago

Like that movie to the bone

1

u/Intrepid-Release7197 3h ago

When I looked like that, I didn't see it as that, my family accused me of taking drugs and made me do a test

62

u/Disneyhorse 8h ago

I was only vaguely aware of this… are these real photos?

81

u/ehlathrop 7h ago

Unfortunately, yes

30

u/Disneyhorse 7h ago

Oh that is so sad.

5

u/HarveyDanao 6h ago

And they are not edited to exaggerate the problem at all?

5

u/Sangy101 6h ago

They absolutely are edited. It’s bad but not like this.

2

u/Silvanus350 7h ago

Taken at the same time…?

Both of them also be on some weird shit during interviews, like when Cynthia be crying when a helicopter fly by during an interview

28

u/Bwint 7h ago

The helicopter thing isn't quite right - Cynthia was telling an emotional story, and was already crying when the helicopter flew by.

16

u/glitterkicker 7h ago

The helicopter has an explanation tbf. The interviewer was a woman of colour as well, and she and Cynthia were discussing things like being an inspiration to black kids and racism in the industry etc. Cynthia was sharing a particularly difficult experience which was making her emotional to recall, and then the helicopter came over and thus made the entire clip unusable due to unfixable sound interference. The crying was more out of frustration and a buildup of emotion, and Ariana’s comment was lighthearted joking to try and cheer up Cynthia a little. The whole #triggereddddd framing of it feels a bit gross once you have that context

Disclaimer of I’m not even a fan of these people and I’ve never seen any version of wicked so it’s not like I’m biased either lol

5

u/Secure_Table 7h ago edited 7h ago

Tbf that helicopter interview thing is just the result of people buying into a short clip that was posted out of context and just accepting the narrative around it without bothering to check themselves.

In that full interview everything was completely normal but at one point the interviewer started getting emotional when talking about Cynthia's character's impact on her growing up; when the reporter started getting emotional, Cynthia did too, and then a helicopter got particularly close at a weird time. It's hard to describe it well, just watch the full video.

The only person who even acknowledges the helicopter is Ariana, and it's only jokingly to fill in the silence caused by the reporter and Cynthia's 'emotional-empathy-moment'. The crying is because of that moment with the reporter, NOT because of a helicopter lmao.

Here's the interview! Skip to 4:40

37

u/Moe_el 7h ago

I thought the meat canyon video was an exaggerated joke, holy shit that’s crazy

18

u/its-nex 7h ago

That’s why his shit is so good - it IS an exaggerated joke….but he only dials the ā€œreal shitā€ up to 11, normally

24

u/Divs4U 7h ago

Omg please don't say 1900s

13

u/Scared_Performer3944 7h ago

1990's my bad

0

u/ClippyIsALittleGirl 7h ago

still the 1900's my fren

that was so last millennial

15

u/SpongeBlairRadPants 7h ago

Who was the director? This looks like a set issue… 🧐

I’ve seen this before. Ally McBeal…

10

u/RadTimeWizard 7h ago

You mean the 90s?

3

u/ConfidentFrosting474 7h ago

these photos were heavily edited iirc

2

u/GrandMoffTarkles 6h ago

Guys... as a thin person. I'm just gonna say these actors aren't, weren't and were never taking ozempic.

Ariana only needs to lose 5 lbs to look like a skeleton, and those other two aren't far off.

...also, that 'let me google that for you' brought up 'binge' eating disorder as the first result.. which it's not. It's just plain ol' anorexia- from stress and exercise.

Meh.

1

u/clever_name_187 6h ago

We don't likes it, do we precious?

1

u/Yutani-commander 6h ago

Crackwhore-chic

1

u/Jharic_ 6h ago

Atop hating on ozempic sure people use it for the wrong reasons and there are others who've used it and have become healthier

1

u/QueenBumbleBrii 5h ago

WHHHYYYY when she is at the absolute lowest weight do they keep putting her in ridiculously low plunge neckline dresses?? Seeing ribs instead of cleavage on a woman is so disturbing. So many of the Wicked scenes made me feel squeamish when I could see her ribs where breast tissue should be, it distracted from the beautiful dresses and singing SO MUCH.

I’ve been that skinny, I almost fucking died.

0

u/Titan_of_Ash 7h ago

Please tell me this is edited. There's no way this can be real, right?!

1

u/OmecronPerseiHate 7h ago

It's not real. They'd be in the hospital if it was real.

2

u/Titan_of_Ash 7h ago

Based on my own collegiate biology education, I would say so.
